Lyla's messed up hair was now styled into two beautiful braids tied with a small scarlet ribbon. As Lyla glanced at herself in the mirror, she could not hide her surprise and remarked, "Not bad, little girl."
I smiled at her casual remark. I turned to Mira who had a satisfied smile on her face. She bowed to Lyla, "It was a pleasure to help you, Miss."
"You can call me Lyla, " she replied as she stood up from the seat. As we three stood together, I couldn't help but notice the difference in height between us.
Lyla was a bold girl who had a pretty nice height as she surpassed both me and Mira in terms of height. While I was shorter than her, on the other hand, Mira was the shortest among us. She looked more like a teenager recalling me of Zoe. They both were of similar age. Something stirred in me as the memories of the past flashed. Our last conversation started to ring in my mind.
Not now. I clenched my hands into fists digging nails into the flesh. I drew a sharp breath, as I turned to Lyla, "Shall we go out?" I proposed the idea which Lyla agreed to instantly, "Sure."
Her gaze turned to Mira who stood silently like before, "You can also come with us little girl," Mira fidgeted with her fingers her eyes met with ours, "If you don't mind can Kira come with us?"
I realized as I noticed Kira did not come yet. Before I could answer, Lyla interrupted, "The other little one with the red hair?" Mira nodded at her question, and replied, "Yes, Miss. She is my little sister."
"Sure, she can come with us," Lyla said while adjusting her hair, I then added, "We probably would see her in the way. So, we should go now." Both the girls agreed and we all walked out.
As we moved out, I observed the surroundings. The corridor stretched long and narrow. The soft sunlight spilled through the tall windows, warming the cool stone floor. The dimly lit by old-fashioned lanterns were now unnecessary. Their flickering glow was replaced by the golden morning light that stretched across the space.
As we walked ahead into the corridor we saw Kira coming in our direction. Exhaustion was evident on her face. Mira came forward and supported her by gripping her shoulders. Her expression went grim, "What happened to you?"
Kira swept off the sweat from her forehead, "Remind me not to have any pups when I grow up." She commented dramatically. I could not help but chuckle at her tone which then I suppressed but Lyla did not hold back and laughed out loud. Taking my support, she wiped off the tears coming from the corner of her eyes.
KKira, however, was not amused by the sight and scowled at us, clearly displeased with Lyla's carefree laughter. She huffed in annoyance like a little kid and stomped on the ground, "It was not that funny," she muttered.
She crossed her arms around her chest as Lyla shot back with a smirk, "Of course not, your expressions are way funnier," she again laughed holding her stomach. "Oh, my stomach.." She groaned, clearly in pain from laughing too hard.
Mira also had a small smile on her face as she watched the scene in front of her.
Kira narrowed her eyes as she spat, "You know what is funnier?" She did not wait for anyone's reply and answered, "The way Miss Lyla looks at Damon."
Lyla's laughter faltered, and her expression turned to stone which made Kira smug. This time Lyla stood straight towering all of us, "What do you mean?" Her voice had a hint of warning clearly indicating Kira to choose her words carefully.
Kira did not seem to care for her warning," The way you two bicker with each other," She took a pause having a playful smile tugged at her lips, before she completed, "You both remind me of an old couple who cannot stay away from each other."
Lyla's eyes widened followed by clenching of her jaws. She gritted out, "Me and that arrogant Damon. A couple?"
Kira blinked her eyes as she was the most innocent girl present in this world. And Mira could sense increasing tension in the air. My lips thinned in a single line, trying to find words to settle the tension between them when Mira unexpectedly stepped up.
"Well, I deny your fact, sister," Mira's calm voice interrupted them both. After getting the attention of both the girls, Mira continued, "From what I've observed, whenever these two are together, they always end up fighting."
Lyla did not hesitate and got beside Mira, "I agree with her. So, shut your mouth, you little redhead." She completed as she spanked Kira's head making her groan in response.
She caressed her head, "You big monster, I will not leave you." With this, Kira lunged at Lyla which she easily dodged and ran in another direction.
"You can't compete with an adult, kid," Lyla's comment worked like gasoline in Kira's anger. She ran in her direction, " I will not leave you!" But Lyla kept running until Kira's breath began to falter. She stopped in the middle as she took in some breaths. When Lyla saw her, she also stopped. Raising one eyebrow, she taunted, "Already tired, redhead?"
Kira glared at her when Lyla again laughed, "You kids are too fragile for your own good, " he flexed her arms proudly and continued, "You see when I was your age, I could continuously run for two days without any breaks."
As she stood there, she didn't notice that a shadow lurked behind her. All of us notice except Lyla. She was still bragging about her strength oblivious to the fact. Kira's grim expression shifted into something more mischievous. She crossed her hand on her chest watching the situation unfolding when Lyla finally noticed her expression.
Her brows drew together as she asked, "Why are you..." Her question remained unfinished as the shadow creeping behind her grabbed her, twisting her around and slamming her against the wall. Lyla gasped at the sudden movement when we all heard a known voice, "You talk a lot, Miss."
Her question was cut off as the shadow behind her grabbed her, twisting her around and slamming her against the wall. Lyla gasped in surprise, and we all heard a deep, playful voice, "You talk a lot, Miss."
