Adaptation to The Future

A few minutes had passed since Natasha introduced herself, and Kai now found himself lying on the exam chair, shirtless, waiting for the procedure to begin. He'd been informed that an implant would be placed in his left arm—a small but crucial device that would store his new identity. In this world, he was essentially a ghost, and without an identity code—commonly called an "IC"—he risked arrest for simply existing. Everyone here had an IC, a chip embedded in their left arm, serving as a personalized database for seamless verification. Unlike Earth, where smartphones were the pinnacle of convenience, everything here was integrated into the body. A simple touch of two fingers to the ear enabled calls, while information could be displayed directly onto one's eyes, unseen by others. Sharing files or data required only the press of palms, and music played straight into the mind, bypassing the need for earphones entirely—all without disturbing anyone nearby. The possibilities were staggering, and Kai couldn't help but marvel at the thought of such technology becoming a part of him. It was both fascinating and unsettling, a glimpse into a future far beyond the one he had left behind.

Anesthesia coursed through Kai's body, a soothing numbness overtaking him as his eyelids grew heavy. The last image that burned into his mind before succumbing to sleep was Natasha's face, her warm smile oddly comforting. With him fully under, the procedure began. Assisted by advanced AI and precise robotic arms, Natasha worked efficiently, her expertise evident in the smooth progress of the operation. Installing the chip in Kai's arm was a routine task for her—she had performed the procedure on hundreds of individuals. However, this time, it wasn't just the arm. Another chip needed to be delicately implanted into his brain. This one was far more sophisticated, designed to store vast amounts of information, instantly dissolve the language barrier, and unlock other cognitive enhancements. While more complex, it was still within Natasha's capabilities, and the procedure went without a hitch.

After about thirty minutes, Kai's eyes fluttered open, greeted by the bright overhead lights. He winced momentarily, his irises quickly adapting to the glare. His vision cleared, and he found himself lying on a hospital-style bed. Groaning softly, he propped himself up, swinging his legs over the edge. A dull ache throbbed in his head, but his mind was already racing with questions about what had just been done to him.

"You're awake, handsome? Give it a few seconds, the headache will pass," Natasha teased, her voice playful as usual. "So, how do you feel? More... advanced? Why don't you give it a try?" She smiled slyly, clearly enjoying this. Kai nodded, intrigued. Testing the chips sounded like a good idea. "Here, let me show you," she said, pressing two fingers lightly to her right ear as if making a call.

A faint ringtone echoed directly in Kai's mind, startling him. He instinctively pressed two fingers to his own ear, mimicking her action, and immediately heard her voice. "Hey, handsome, wanna grab a coffee?" Natasha's voice resonated smoothly in his mind, clear and intimate, as though she were whispering directly to him. It was a surreal experience, akin to talking through a high-tech earbud but far more immersive.

Kai blinked in surprise, then broke into a wide grin of pure excitement, completely captivated by the technology. He was so caught up in marveling at it that he didn't even register the playful nature of her words. Natasha chuckled softly, amused by his reaction. Watching his childlike excitement, she couldn't help but think, He's adorable

"Well, you can test more of it later. Someone's waiting for you outside," Natasha said with a wink. "Bye-bye, then. We'll meet again, handsome. Sooner than you think." Before Kai could respond, she leaned in and planted a quick kiss on his cheek, then playfully pushed him toward the lab door.

That woman was definitely something else. Rubbing his cheek where her lips had briefly touched, Kai found himself smiling—though he wasn't entirely sure why. His thoughts were interrupted by a deep, steady voice.

"Outsider, I'm Jack Newton. I've been assigned as your bodyguard—"

"And I'm Hana!" another voice chirped, cutting him off mid-sentence. "I'll be your tour guide! Oh my gosh, there's so much I want to show you! Maybe we can start at the plaza—or, ooh, how about that café with the amazing view? Or—" She rattled on excitedly, barely pausing for breath.

Kai took in the pair standing before him. Jack, a stoic man around the same height as Natasha, stood tall with a sharp, serious expression. He looks around the same age as Kai. His suit was crisp and professional, with a handgun holstered on his right hip—and, to Kai's surprise, a katana strapped to his left. A katana? In a world this advanced? The juxtaposition was strange but fascinating.

Beside Jack was the complete opposite: a bubbly young woman with a bright smile and sparkling eyes. She was much shorter than the two men, standing about 160 cm tall, her energy practically bouncing off the walls. Her age should be younger than Kai and Jack. A quiet, no-nonsense bodyguard and an endlessly chatty tour guide—what an unusual and oddly intriguing pair.

"Nice to meet you, Jack and Hana," Kai said, though his tone carried a hint of confusion. "But why do I need a bodyguard? And a tour guide, for that matter?" He frowned slightly. He didn't feel like he was in any immediate danger, so the need for a bodyguard seemed excessive. And as for the tour guide... Did that mean he'd actually be allowed to explore outside the facility?

Jack stepped forward, his sharp, no-nonsense voice cutting through Kai's thoughts. "You may appear harmless to most people, but some... groups have already caught wind of your arrival. These factions have dangerous reputations and will do anything to gain an advantage. To them, you, as an outsider, are a valuable asset—someone they'd exploit without hesitation. My job is to ensure that doesn't happen and to keep you safe at all costs."

Kai processed this for a moment, a knot forming in his stomach. Jack's explanation was sobering, but his calm, authoritative demeanor gave Kai a small sense of reassurance. Then Jack turned his gaze toward Hana, who appeared momentarily distracted.

"Hm?" she said, blinking as if she hadn't realized she was being addressed. "Oh! Right!" Her eyes lit up, and she grinned brightly. "As your tour guide, it's my job to help you familiarize yourself with our world and adapt to our culture. I'll make sure you're not a total fish out of water! Plus, this is going to be so much fun!"

Before Kai could respond, she grabbed his hand and practically dragged him toward the exit, her energy as infectious as ever. "Let's get started!" she chirped enthusiastically.

Jack followed close behind, his measured steps a stark contrast to Hana's bubbly demeanor. He sighed quietly, his expression tinged with exasperation. "She really should be more careful..." he muttered to himself, shaking his head as he trailed after them.
