Chapter 4

I smiled.

This trip, I had hoped to play matchmaker for Melody.

But Ashton flew into a rage at me: "Are you a matchmaker or something? Always trying to set people up. That friend of yours has a bad temper and is nothing but trouble. Don't even think about inflicting her on my brother!"

I tossed a piece of firewood into the flames. "They're both here. Why don't you ask them yourself?"

The fire leapt high, illuminating everyone's faces, each hiding their own agenda.

I stayed to the side, and Ashton could only barely contain his jealousy.

Melody noticed and was even more pleased. She took the initiative to ask Callie, "Come on, tell us. What kind of girls do you three guys like?"

She tilted her head, her eyes sparkling, looking innocent and pure.

I just never expected that Callie, who was always so aloof, would actually respond to this question.

"What kind do you like?"

This sentence was normal enough. The only thing abnormal was...

This sentence.

Callie said it while looking at me.

The atmosphere froze.

My heart skipped a beat, and my cheeks flushed.

But that must have been from the heat of the bonfire.

Callie's expression remained as cold as ever, betraying no emotion.

As if he didn't realize how ambiguous his words were. Ashton, unable to contain himself any longer, lashed out: "Callie, what kind of question is that? Delia is my fiancée, of course she likes someone like me. Are you playing dumb or what?"

Everyone turned to look at me.

I thought for a moment before choosing to answer the question: "Me? I like honest men. Honest with others, with themselves, and with me."

Having said that, I ignored Ashton's sour face and stood up to leave.

Just three minutes earlier, I had identified the third suspect.

Donavan, the notorious nice guy in our class.

He was always eager to help others. Once, when I had a fever in the middle of the night, he carried me to the school infirmary through heavy snow.

I didn't want to suspect him initially.

Until I sent out a probing message.

"I know what you did last night. You left something at my place."

I saw it clearly. The moment he read the message.

He panicked.
