I clutched the paper sack tightly against my face, gasping for air as I struggled to breathe.
Just as I felt on the verge of fainting, Yoder's words pierced through my panic, "Zamari... I've located him."
I tried to leap from the vehicle, but my legs buckled as soon as I stepped out. I crumpled onto the asphalt.
Yoder quickly set down the container holding the bone fragment to assist me. However, I disregarded his help and crawled towards Bruce's remains.
My single-minded focus seemed to stun Yoder into silence. He stood motionless as I finally reached the box, then slumped against the wall, cradling the precious fragment.
At last, he chuckled bitterly, "Zamari, did you ever care for me as deeply as you did for him? Can you imagine how it feels to watch you waste away in that room, consumed by memories of him?"
"It seems I'll never measure up to him, even though he's gone. That's the truth, isn't it?"
