CHAPTER 1
"Loosen up a bit, will you?" Chen dragged me toward the club entrance, his grip firm while I resisted with all my might.
"I need to go home. My dad's getting back from his work trip today," I argued, digging my heels into the pavement.
"Forget about your old man and just have fun," he said, ignoring my protests as we reached the entrance, where two massive bouncers stood guard, their cold stares daring us to cause trouble.
I sighed, the headache forming in my temples a reminder of how easily I could've avoided this if I'd just hurried home after my last exam. Instead, I'd waited for my best friend—only to be dragged to a club, the last place I wanted to be.
Chen and I were polar opposites. While I was the nerd who kept to myself, Chen was the outgoing type of geek—the kind who was popular because his sister was drop-dead gorgeous. Somehow, our shared love for gaming made us inseparable, but right now, I was questioning that bond.
"Just loosen up, alright? Our classmates have arranged for booze and girls," Chen added, his grin widening as we entered the VIP section.
I froze in the doorway. The room was exactly as he described, minus the girls—a small mercy, though I suspected they'd show up any minute.
Before I could voice my frustration, Chen yanked off my glasses and shoved me inside. "Come on, Luis! It's just one night!"
As my eyes adjusted to the dim lighting, a voice I'd recognize anywhere sent a shiver down my spine.
"Look who we have here. If it isn't the cute nerd of our class. Where are your glasses?"
I turned and found myself face-to-face with Garber Yarros.
The school's golden boy—the genius who excelled in everything, from academics to sports, and whose good looks made him the object of everyone's admiration. I'd idolized him once, back in freshman year. But that was before my life turned to shit.
"Yo, guys, don't Garber and the new boy look like a couple?" Ethan, the school hunk, shouted from across the room, drawing all eyes to us. Six pairs of curious gazes pinned me to the spot.
Couple? Was this a dream?
Did we actually look like a couple? I felt a small smile tug at the corners of my lips at the thought. But the moment was short-lived.
Garber shoved me away with such force I stumbled to the ground. "Ew, that's gay, Ethan. Disgusting," he said, his voice dripping with disdain. Without sparing me another glance, he moved to the other side of the room, dusting off his sleeves like I'd infected him.
The sting of his words cut deeper than I expected. My heart cracked, the rejection sharper than any blade. I'd never even approached him before—only admired him from afar. And yet, here he was, breaking my heart without even knowing it.
"Gay? How disgusting," Garber added loudly. "When are the girls coming in?" He took a long swig from his drink as if to wash away the very idea of us being linked together.
The humiliation was too much. With tears threatening to spill, I bolted from the room, ignoring the laughter and jeers behind me. The suffocating air of the club felt unbearable as I ran down the corridor, my heart pounding in sync with the bass-heavy music.
I didn't stop until I reached the restroom, where I locked myself inside and slid to the floor. The tears came fast, burning hot trails down my cheeks as I buried my face in my hands.
