"Brother, where did this cake come from?"
"I found it on the way."
Chen Dafen was lazily lying on the couch, while Chen Xiaoling beamed with delight, carefully unwrapping the cake. She knew her brother was teasing her, but as long as it was from him, she had no doubts about it.
"Mr. Lu, here's a piece for you."
Chen Xiaoling divided the small cake into three portions, handing one to Lu Nianxin and another to Chen Dafen. "Brother, here's the biggest one for you."
"I don't eat sweets."
Chen Dafen waved it off, staring out the window, lost in thought.
"Da Feng."
Lu Nianxin leaned in, glancing at Chen Xiaoling, who was savoring her cake, then lowered his voice. "I have this feeling that something's off after your little outing. Did you go after a woman?"
"Do I need a woman?"
Chen Dafen shot him a sideways glance, frowning and scolding, "Don't get so close, and stop calling me by my name!"
"Then what should I call you?"
Lu Nianxin looked innocently at him as he edged closer. "Da Feng, where did you get that cake?"
"Mind your own business."
Chen Dafen glared coldly at him, his voice sharp. "Don't talk about things that aren't your concern."
"Sure, sure."
Lu Nianxin grinned nonchalantly and then, with a mysterious tone, spoke up. "Da Feng, are you bored?"
"What do you want?"
Chen Dafen raised an eyebrow, his expression skeptical.
Lu Nianxin lowered his voice. "Come to my room, I've got something cool to show you."
"Spit it out."
"I just thought, since it's quiet in the settlement at night, I've prepared a little surprise for you."
Lu Nianxin stood up, gesturing for him to follow. "Come on, let me show you something good."
Chen Dafen stared at him blankly for a moment but didn't move. Lu Nianxin chuckled.
"Da Feng, what are you afraid of?"
Of course, Chen Dafen wasn't afraid. He abruptly stood up and followed Lu Nianxin into the room.
Chen Xiaoling glanced up at the two men curiously before returning to her contentment, still enjoying her rare treat.
Nighttime was long and uneventful.
Especially since Jiang Xiaoci had been too busy these days to spend time with Mike. The only source of solace for Mike was the localized network and the newly launched community game set up by Chen Qiuren and his team.
After dinner, Mike quickly opened his computer to relax. As soon as the game interface loaded, an announcement popped up.
"Announcement: In response to the directive signed by our Commander, the [Entertainment Regulations for Settlements], we are expanding our service to the people of Jinling through the localized network of this game. We have made use of military-grade communication channels, extending the network to multiple gathering points, allowing more citizens to join and enjoy this game together."
Mike glanced at the announcement, somewhat surprised. "That was fast. Just a few days ago they launched the game, and now people from other settlements are already joining?"
Considering the vast distance between the three major gathering points, it was nearly half the size of Jinling itself. The network now covered this range, which was already nearing a city-level remote communications and electronic information connection. It was a significant achievement in the field of military communications.
"It's true—the bigger the population, the faster the development."
Mike mumbled to himself, feeling both surprised and pleased. The game's popularity was growing quickly, and with the large number of players online, it was clear that entertainment demands were fueling technological advancements.
He logged into the game, noticing that the number of online users had skyrocketed to over 20,000. This was impressive, considering the total population of all three gathering points combined was less than 100,000.
"Is it because there's adult content in the game? That could explain the high engagement."
Mike rubbed his chin, then opened the leaderboard, which made his jaw drop. "What the hell? Yesterday, I was number one, and now I'm number two?"
Someone had surpassed him, particularly in the work points recharge leaderboard, breaking the 10,000-point recharge threshold.
"Could it be...Chen Dafen?"
Mike switched views and saw Lu Nianxin and Chen Dafen playing together, with Lu Nianxin whining, "I can't beat this boss, Da Feng! Help me out!"
"Just practice more."
Chen Dafen effortlessly clicked through the game, slashing the boss to help Lu Nianxin, then leaned back, savoring the praise.
"Da Feng, you're amazing! You're so strong!" Lu Nianxin looked up at him, eyes sparkling.
"Of course I am," Chen Dafen said with a smug smile, enjoying the moment.
In the game, his character was radiant in gold, looking every bit the high-roller.
"Wow, he's a real gaming addict!"
"With that many work points, he spent them all on the game?"
Mike stared, stunned. He hadn't expected Chen Dafen to be so extravagant.
But when you thought about it, Chen Dafen didn't need the points for much else—he wasn't struggling with basic needs, and he didn't have to worry about supporting subordinates. If he had surplus points, why not blow them on a game?
"Should I adjust the data to knock him down a peg?"
Mike hesitated, knowing he had access to the server's backend, where he could directly modify his character stats.
After thinking for a moment, Mike decided against it. "Let him enjoy it. It's better than him going around trying to kill people."
He closed his laptop, pleased with his decision. With Lu Nianxin guiding him, Chen Xiaoling starting to settle in, and Jiang Xiaoci keeping an eye on him, Chen Dafen's situation was under control.
"Only with a hilt does the sword become useful."
Mike nodded to himself, deciding not to log into the game again, and let Chen Dafen have his fun in the virtual world.
Now, Mike turned his attention to other matters. "What should I do next... Damn! I almost forgot!"
"My shelter should be ready for an upgrade."
He slapped his forehead. With all the recent conflicts taking up his time, he nearly forgot about his plan to push the shelter's level up.
