Vengeance Curse!
Chen Dafeng's expression suddenly froze, his eyes darkened. "That bastard!" he hissed. "Damn it, did he really go to Guangling?"
"Yeah," Xiao Su nodded, her eyes filled with shared hatred. "That damn bastard! I treated him well—during the first month of the apocalypse, I even brought him food. And what did I get in return? A snake in the grass, turning around and selling us out!"
"Commander Su, this whole situation... it's a misunderstanding!" Li Aiguo suddenly had an epiphany, slapping his head in frustration. "Damn it! So it was those traitors behind this. They must all be in Guangling now. What are we going to do?"
"Yeah, what now?" Mike squinted, a smirk on his face as he chuckled. "I remember every S-level talent from Xinchang. Looks like Comrade Li's memory could use some work. After all, a commander should know about the situation of the survivors under their command. Not knowing this? Doesn't seem very competent, does it?"
Mike's words were a thinly veiled jab, almost outright accusing Li Aiguo: "You lazy bastard, are you so eager to make me fight Guangling?"
"Hahaha, indeed! You're absolutely right!" Li Aiguo nodded with a grin, shamelessly tucking away the booklet he had been pretending to examine. He knew that Mike possessed a talent for detection and could likely sense the booklet's aura. Pretending to study it was just his way of signaling, "The person you're looking for isn't here."
Perhaps the moment Chen Dafeng appeared, this "yellow-haired" man knew exactly what was going on. After all, in a place as vast as Dantu, it was impossible that there wasn't a single detection-type talent, and surely not everyone could miss the fact that Chen Dafeng had been infected with the Vengeance Curse.
Mike wasn't surprised that Guangling was involved in this mess—after all, the real mastermind behind the scenes was trying to stir chaos across Jiangnan, and so they naturally had plans for Guangling.
If it weren't for Mike having Jiang Xiaoci, it's likely that no one would have uncovered how deeply infiltrated Xinchang was.
What did surprise Mike was Li Aiguo. The guy had thick skin, trying to provoke a fight between Xinchang and Guangling without even bothering to hide it.
So this is how it's going to go, huh? You want to make me and Guangling go at it so you can profit from the chaos?
"Looks like I'll have to go to Guangling then," Mike said, glancing at Chen Dafeng with a relaxed smile. "Sorry for disturbing you all tonight, but I really appreciate the crucial intel from Comrade Li. I promise, after we start the fight with Guangling, I'll try not to involve Dantu."
With two cities so close to each other, if a battle broke out, who would care about the collateral damage?
Mike's words were a clear threat.
"Ha! That's a relief!" Li Aiguo laughed. "Commander Su, you've got guts, going straight for the culprit. No harm to the innocent! You know what they say—an eye for an eye. The enemy of my enemy is my friend!"
Xiao Su muttered under her breath, "What an idiot, misusing words."
Chen Dafeng's heart skipped a beat. He certainly didn't dare to insult Mike like that. It was clear that Li Aiguo was at ease in Dantu, not bothered by his subordinates mocking him.
Mike raised an eyebrow, hearing a different implication in Li Aiguo's words. "What, do you want to go after Guangling too?"
"Of course!" Li Aiguo grinned. "I dream about it! But I don't have the guts to leave Dantu, not by myself. I wouldn't dare."
Li Aiguo smiled, still playful. "You, though... I admire your courage. But Guangling is strong. If you just waltz over there, this Chen guy might not last 24 hours."
"If he doesn't last, he doesn't last," Mike chuckled. "Like you said, worst case, we just destroy the shelter."
Dantu had clearly already discovered a method to "farm points" by repeatedly destroying shelters, though Mike didn't know how they planned to divide up the spoils.
"Oh, what a shame," Li Aiguo mused. "An S-class talent like him, with that power—honestly, it's amazing. It's almost on par with an SSS-class talent!"
Li Aiguo seemed genuinely regretful for Chen Dafeng. "If you lose a top general like that, you might not even be able to handle Guangling."
Mike grinned, enjoying the conversation. "So, what do you think I should do?"
Li Aiguo seemed to deliberate for a moment, then clenched his teeth. "How about this? I'll help you cure Chen's curse. How does that sound?"
"Deal!" Mike agreed without a second thought. He'd been waiting for Li Aiguo to say that.
Suddenly, Chen Dafeng spoke up, his voice tinged with suspicion. "Commander, I'm afraid he's just pretending to help me... but he might actually harm me."
The communicator was connected to his own device, allowing him to hear every word exchanged between the two commanders.
"You've finally started thinking smart," Mike laughed softly. "Why weren't you this sharp back in Xinchang? We wouldn't even be here otherwise."
Mike, of course, trusted Li Aiguo. From a commander's perspective, sending people to Dantu already showed that Mike's influence was substantial. There was no way Dantu wouldn't be worried.
Li Aiguo's subtle hints about Guangling having a hand in harming Chen Dafeng, and his claim of being innocent, were calculated moves to reassure Mike. He was signaling, "We have common enemies here; we shouldn't fight amongst ourselves."
Mike understood, but didn't comment.
Their exchange continued as they walked toward a small residential building.
"Your savior lives here," Li Aiguo said, leading the way with a smile. "Come on up. He's the top doctor in our city."
Chen Dafeng followed cautiously, still unsure of what was really going on. They reached the eighth floor, and Li Aiguo knocked on a door.
An elderly man with white hair opened the door, leaning on a cane. Li Aiguo greeted him respectfully. "Old Xu, I've brought him to you."
"I saw the messages on the chat channel. Let him sit for a while," the old man, Xu, replied, sizing up Chen Dafeng.
As soon as Chen Dafeng stepped inside, he was hit with a strong herbal scent that made his head swim. The smell was overwhelming.
He sat down on the couch, careful not to breathe too deeply. His eyes warily scanned the surroundings.
The room was dimly lit, with no electricity, just a few candles flickering in the breeze. The furnishings were typical of a residential home—tables, chairs, and appliances—along with Daoist images on the walls, a fire stove in the corner, and a bookshelf full of old books.
Next to the bookshelf was a large, specialized storage cabinet with many small drawers labeled with the names of various herbs.
"Is this a pharmacy at home?" Chen Dafeng muttered.
Li Aiguo overheard and laughed heartily. "Yeah, the first month of the apocalypse, I helped move Old Xu's pharmacy back here."
"He's a well-known doctor in Dantu, even before the apocalypse. In the early days, no one bothered him. People often brought supplies and helped guard his place."
Li Aiguo seemed proud. "And guess what? Old Xu's ability isn't just a healing talent—it's an SSS-class talent."
