Chapter 1

Tiernan is a fireworks designer.

When we got married, he promised to give me a grand and unique fireworks show.

But in our seven years together, his fireworks have never been for me, not even a single spark.

Yet on our wedding anniversary, he put on an all-night display for his little childhood sweetheart.

The sky blazed with flames that spoke of his love for her.

Later, he begged for forgiveness with blue fireworks lighting up the entire city.

He didn't know that I had already gone blind.

And no longer cared.

Fireworks designer Tiernan has made headlines again.

All because he set off a spectacular display at the foot of Mount Everest, just to make his beloved smile.

But that person wasn't me, his wife, but his little childhood sweetheart Cadence.

The night shift nurse excitedly showed the video to the doctor and me.

"This girl looks beautiful even from the side! The fireworks display truly befits the great Tiernan!"

I quickly glanced at the video, feigning agreement with a nod, but my heart was filled with bitterness.

Today was supposed to be my fifth wedding anniversary with Tiernan.

He hadn't acknowledged it all day; I thought he might have forgotten in his busyness.

So I prepared a lavish dinner and gifts, hoping to surprise him.

I waited for hours, but he didn't come home, and he wasn't answering his phone.

Just as I was losing hope, I received a message from him asking me to go to Mount Rushmore.

In that moment, I couldn't help but jump for joy.

Tiernan had once promised to give me a grand and unique fireworks show.

He must be asking me to watch fireworks at Mount Rushmore!

My previous disappointment vanished, and I left the house with a beaming smile.

After a challenging climb to the Mount Rushmore viewing platform, before I could catch my breath, I was startled by the sudden burst of fireworks.

Then I heard Cadence's crisp laughter.

"Tiernan, thank you for the fireworks you set off for me!"

Her radiant smile outshone even the fireworks.I flee in a panic, unable to stop myself.

Halfway up the mountain, I suddenly slip and fall, my head hitting a rock hard.

For an instant, everything goes dark. It takes a long while before I start to feel better...

The doctor raps on the desk several times, snapping me back to reality.

"The dizziness and disorientation may be due to a mild concussion from the impact, but we can't rule out the possibility of a brain bleed."

"If you're still concerned, come back tomorrow for a brain CT scan."

I make a note of the doctor's words and go to pick up my prescription.

Back home, I stand at the doorway, my phone open to my contacts. I tap in and out of the screen repeatedly.

Tiernan's call comes through first.

His voice is still cool and alluring, tinged with gentle regret.

"Sunny, I have some things to take care of tonight. I'm not sure when I'll be back, so get some rest."

Many words are caught in my throat. I open my mouth, but in the end only manage to say: "Okay."

The call ends abruptly as always. I remain frozen in my phone-answering pose.

The room is dim, cold soup and rice left out on the table.

The next morning, Tiernan's expression momentarily stiffens when he sees the food still on the dining table.

"Is this from last night's dinner?"

I nod listlessly, my gaze returning to my phone.Tiernan approached me with a bag, filled with guilt.

"Sunny, I'm sorry I missed our wedding anniversary. This is a gift I bought for you."

Soon, an exquisite necklace appeared before me.

It looked so familiar.

I had seen it on Cadence's social media.

I glanced at it but didn't take it.

Tiernan frowned, a bit impatient.

"Are you still mad that I didn't come home last night? I already told you I had other things to take care of."

"We've been married for so long, we've celebrated every holiday. Why do we have to make a big deal out of this wedding anniversary?"
