"You first come back and tell me!"
"If you didn't want me to see Cadence, you should have said so earlier, instead of pretending not to care. You think it's fun to play me?"
I pause in my attempt to lie down.
Looking at Tiernan's furious expression, I can't be bothered to expose his lies.
Just five minutes ago, I came across a recommended post about Cadence.
It was a photo of two movie tickets.
The man's hand in the picture was one I had once reverently kissed.
On the ring finger was the wedding band I had personally designed.
Now, it's only been half an hour since the movie ended, how could he have been looking for me all day?
I darken my expression and say coldly, "I wanted to tell you too, but you didn't answer my calls. The theater requires phones to be on silent, right?"
"Oh, I forgot, when I called you, it was still two hours before the movie started."
A flash of surprise crosses Tiernan's eyes, then he hurriedly says, "It's not what you think, Sunny. Let me explain."
"Okay, go ahead. I'm listening."
After I speak expressionlessly, Tiernan presses his lips tightly together and stares at me intently.
Like a big puppy dog.
I used to fall for this act.
With such a handsome face looking at me so earnestly, how could I not soften?Tiernan knew this.
Many times, after abandoning me for Cadence, this was how he begged for my forgiveness.
Seeing the foundation stains on his collar, and faced with his clumsy lies and pleading eyes, I just felt emotionally drained.
Tiernan came over and sat on the edge of the bed, changing the subject.
"Sunny, how were the test results?"
I pointed to the cabinet in the corner and said, "The results are over there, look for yourself."
I couldn't help but add sarcastically, "The doctor said I might go blind. That must suit you just fine. You can do whatever you want with Cadence in the future, and I won't be able to see. How convenient."
Tiernan's movements halted, his face instantly darkening, on the verge of anger.
"Are you crazy? Saying things like that just to piss me off!"
"It'd be best if you went blind. Then you wouldn't be so stubborn and would have to beg me for help."
His words ignited my anger instantly, and my head began to throb with pain.
"Let's get divorced right now, so you won't have to be bothered later!"
"If I go blind, it's because of you and Cadence!"
"If Cadence hadn't tricked me into going to Mount Everest, I wouldn't have fallen and hit my head. It's all—"
Halfway through my sentence, Tiernan angrily interrupted.
"Enough!"No wonder you've been acting so weird these past couple of days. You already knew about the concert, didn't you?
"You're something else. It was just a concert, and you had to go out of your way to see it. Don't you trust me at all?"
"What's this about being tricked into going and hitting your head? I bet you went along willingly. Now you're trying to use the concert as leverage, aren't you?"
"I'm sleeping in the guest room for the next few days. You need to cool off."
In the past, whenever we fought, no matter who was right or wrong, I'd always be the first to apologize meekly as soon as Tiernan said we needed to cool down.
But I don't want to do that anymore.
Cooling off just means giving each other the silent treatment. I don't want to drag this out, so I might as well say it: "Why don't we talk about getting a divorce instead?"
Tiernan's lips tightened, his gaze lingering on my face for a long moment.
"What do you mean? You really want a divorce?"
"Yeah, a divorce."
Tiernan paced anxiously around the room, stopping at the cabinet where his fingers landed on the envelope with the test results.
For a moment, my heart tightened, and I couldn't help but watch his movements.
But then, he angrily swept the envelope to the floor, saying: "Fine, let's get a divorce! Don't you dare regret it!"
I watched as the weightless envelope fluttered to the ground.
My eyes stung a little, and a twinge of pain mixed with a hint of bitterness spread through my chest. If Tiernan cared about me even half as much as he cares about Cadence, he would have at least picked up the x-rays to take a look. Instead, he didn't even glance at them, and even stepped on them as he left.
