I ran.
Branches grazing my skin, roots threatened to trip me, but I didn't stop. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and something worse THEM. The wolves were closing in.
My breath came in gasps as I pushed myself forward, dodging between trees, my heartbeat drowning out everything else. My only focus was on my survival.
Then I heard it. A growl. Close. Too close.
I threw myself behind a fallen tree just as a massive black wolf emerges from the shadows. It landed where I had been seconds ago, claws digging into the ground.
My chest heaved as I pressed myself against the rough bark, trying to steady my breathing. Think, Elara. Think.
Running wasn't enough. I needed a plan. I needed to...
"Don't move."
I flinched. The voice was barely a whisper, yet it cut through the atmosphere like a blade. My body tensed as I turned my head slightly. The stranger. The one from before. He was crouched a few feet away, blending into the darkness.
"How...."
"Shh." He held a finger to his lips. "They'll hear you."
I swallowed hard, my throat dry. The black wolf sniffed the air, ears twitching. Then, as if sensing something, it turned its head sharply in our direction.
Damn it.
The stranger reacted first. In a blur, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me up. "Run."
I barely had time to register what was happening before my legs carried me forward again. But this time, I wasn't alone.
The wolves gave chase, their snarls splitting the air. The stranger was fast like really fast for a human. He moved like a shadow, weaving through the trees with unnatural ease.
Who the hell was he?
The forest opened up into a rocky incline, and my lungs burned as I scrambled up. The stranger didn't stop. Neither did the wolves.
Then suddenly, he yanked me sideways. I stumbled, nearly falling as we slipped into a crevice between two boulders. He pressed a hand against my mouth, silencing my panicked breaths.
The wolves arrived seconds later.
Through the narrow gap, I could see them the three of them now, all massive, their silver eyes glowing in the moonlight. Their leader, the black one, let out a low growl. It knew we were close.
Please don't find us. Please don't find us.
The seconds stretched, the tension unbearable. Then, finally, the black wolf huffed and turned away. One by one, the others followed.
We waited. Even after their footsteps faded, the stranger didn't move. Only when the forest was silent again did he finally pull his hand away.
I gasped for air.
He met my gaze, his eyes unreadable. "You're lucky," he murmured. "They weren't here to kill you."
I frowned, my chest still rising and falling rapidly. "What do you mean?"
A pause. Then he said something that sent a chill down my spine.
"They were here to take you along with them"
