Chapter 3

Little did I know, it was all a lie from the very beginning.

The pursuit was fake, the marriage certificate was fake, even the illness was fake.

Yet I fell helplessly into the web of lies he wove about so-called love.

Dean Everhart wasn't entirely right - I'm not like my mother.

She could give up everything, even her life, for the country's scientific expedition.

I think that should have been my true calling.

Three days after I woke up, Garrison came to see me as usual.

"Meadow, how are you feeling? Is there anything still bothering you?"

His tone was caring, just like many times since we got married.

Only this time, I didn't respond enthusiastically. Instead, I said flatly,

"I want to go home."

He was slightly taken aback, hesitating for a moment before saying,

"I'll ask the doctor if you can be discharged."

After an examination, I was granted my wish to leave the hospital.

He took me back to what I once thought was my safe haven.

As soon as we opened the door, I suddenly noticed the place was decorated exceptionally festively.

A massive cake sat on the table.

"Meadow, happy 26th birthday!"

I stared blankly at the cake, allowing Garrison to cup my face and kiss me.

He actually remembered my birthday.

"What are you standing there for? Quick, make a wish and blow out the candles!" I was embraced and led to the cake. Just as I was about to close my eyes, a phone call came through.

He hurriedly went to the study to answer it. When he came back out, his face was filled with concern as he spoke to me.

"Meadow, something's happened to River. I need to go check on him. I'm so sorry!"

Before I could respond, he had already rushed out the door.

Not long after, I received a video on my phone.

In the video, Melody was tugging pitifully at Garrison's sleeve, her face pale and utterly heart-wrenching.

"Garrison, I'm pregnant! I can't believe I'm pregnant! What am I going to do?"

Garrison gently wiped away her tears, speaking with utmost sincerity.

"Don't be scared, it's going to be okay! I'll take good care of you and the baby!"

Hearing his words, Melody still broke down, saying:

"But Jaxon died in a car accident! I don't want my child to be born without a father!"

"Melody, don't worry! I promise you, I'll be the child's father!"

Only then did Melody blink her tear-filled eyes and throw herself into his arms.

My heart, however, trembled violently at his words, and the hand holding my phone began to shake slightly. The video showed their embracing figures, like a sledgehammer pounding relentlessly on my heart.

Tears suddenly fell like pearls from a broken string, unstoppable in their descent.

My hand unconsciously caressed my belly, and before my eyes flashed the image of that tiny, newly formed fetus on the ultrasound.

She should have come into this world.
