Chapter 29: The Power of the Psychic Plate
"But to ensure you don't repeat your mistakes, you'll be under observation for a while. During this period, you'll stay with me."
"Observation... for a while..."
Green was stunned.
Did this mean she'd have to stick with this guy for the foreseeable future?
Professor Oak, hearing Asahi's plan, nodded in agreement.
Giving her a second chance while keeping her under watch was indeed a mature way to handle the situation.
"But... won't this interfere with your work?" Oak asked tactfully, avoiding directly mentioning Asahi's position as an international police officer.
Asahi shook his head. "It won't."
In truth, Asahi had deeper reasons for keeping Green around, but those plans were related to his future vision for the international police and weren't something he could reveal yet.
Seeing Asahi's confidence, Professor Oak didn't press further. Though he had only interacted with Asahi twice, he could tell Asahi was someone who knew his own mind.
With that, the case of the stolen Pokémon was officially closed.
Professor Oak, relieved to have this matter resolved, added, "The new batch of trainers has already picked up their starter Pokémon. My grandson, Gary, has already set off. If you happen to run into him, please look out for him."
"Oh, and there's Ash. You probably don't know him, but he's... let's just say a handful..."
"No problem," Asahi replied.
It was a simple favor.
As Asahi was about to end the call, he suddenly remembered something. "By the way, Professor Oak, I encountered Team Rocket chasing after Mew at Mt. Moon. If you're interested in Mew..."
Before he could finish, Professor Oak became visibly flustered.
Ignoring the spilled instant noodles on his desk, he leaned toward the screen. "Did you say Mew?!"
Not surprising—this was Mew they were talking about.
Even in the academic world, Mew's existence was still a matter of debate due to the lack of concrete evidence.
"Yeah, I disrupted Team Rocket's plan to capture Mew. If you're interested, you can request their interrogation records from the Alliance," Asahi said.
He didn't mention that he had personally interacted with Mew.
Since Mew regarded him as a friend, Asahi wouldn't reveal anything about it without Mew's consent.
---
After Professor Oak hurriedly ended the call to contact his colleagues in the Alliance, Asahi turned to Green.
"All right, during your observation period, you'll stay with me."
"..."
Green was on the verge of tears. She wanted to refuse, but she knew she didn't have a choice.
Still, she wasn't ready to give up. If Asahi let his guard down, she'd find a way to escape!
After all, escaping was her specialty!
But just as the thought crossed her mind, Asahi, as if reading her mind, smiled and said:
"Don't even think about running. See my Gardevoir? She's already placed a psychic marker on you. As long as you're within a certain range, she'll know exactly where you are. Unless you have a Psychic-type Pokémon stronger than her to remove the marker, you're not going anywhere."
"What's your Gardevoir's level?" Green asked hesitantly.
Asahi smiled faintly.
"Elite Four-level."
Green's vision went dark. For a moment, her future felt hopeless.
---
At a rented training field...
Asahi was testing Gardevoir's abilities, while Green sat on a bench at the side of the training field, feeding her Pokémon.
On the field:
"Psychic!" Asahi commanded, raising his hand.
Buzz!
Floating mid-air and holding the Psychic Plate, Gardevoir's eyes glowed a deep blue.
The next moment, a steel target in the center of the field crumpled into a ball, compressed under Gardevoir's immense psychic force.
Sitting on the sidelines, Green watched this unfold, her estimation of Gardevoir's strength rising yet again.
"Maybe this strength could even match... that person..." Green thought, falling into silent contemplation.
Asahi, unaware of her musings, turned to Gardevoir and asked:
"How does it feel?"
It had been a while since he gave Gardevoir the Psychic Plate. Renting the training field today was to carefully observe any changes in her abilities.
Gardevoir landed gracefully in front of Asahi and communicated her feelings through telepathy.
"A 30% boost in Psychic-type moves?"
Asahi rubbed his chin. The increase was greater than the 20% boost typical in the games, but considering this was the real world and not a rigid system, it made sense.
"Gardevoir~!"
Gardevoir raised her arm, and psychic energy shimmered along her blue forearm.
"You're saying your mental strength is still steadily growing?"
Gardevoir nodded. She could feel her psychic energy expanding, even if the changes were subtle and almost imperceptible. Over time, these minor improvements would accumulate into something significant.
Moreover, she could sense that the Psychic Plate was continuously pushing her mind toward a higher level of power.
After hearing Gardevoir's explanation, Asahi fell into deep thought. He realized he had underestimated the true power of the Psychic Plate.
"This must be what you'd expect from something tied to Arceus."
In reality, each Plate wasn't just a tool to enhance moves. Instead, they represented a fragment of Arceus' divine power and energy, far surpassing the simplistic effects described in the games.
"This Plate might just be Gardevoir's key to advancing to Champion level."
The leap from Elite Four-tier to Champion-tier wasn't easy. Many Pokémon spent their entire lives unable to achieve that breakthrough.
Even though Asahi believed in Gardevoir's exceptional talent, reaching Champion-level would still require a long and arduous journey.
But with the Psychic Plate, everything was different now. The time and effort needed to achieve that breakthrough might be drastically shortened.
"Dratini and Bagon have their Dragon Crystals, and Gardevoir has the Psychic Plate. Everyone has a bright future ahead!"
