A Loyalty Test

My own initial difficulty was this. I entered the clearing, the pendant around my neck throbbing weakly as I was guided into the heart of the woodland. Marlon stood close by; his face blank as he described the work.

 "A rogue has been captured close to our border," he stated. "They will only talk to you; they say they know the intentions of the competing pack. Get them working for you without compromising the pack.

 I scowled, my chest becoming tight. Then should I fail?"

"Then you show that the bond clouds your judgement," he remarked.

 The renegade was tethered to a tree, their black eyes watchful and piercing as I got nearby. Their stance was stiff; every motion deliberates as they examined me.

 With a flat tone, "You're the Beta's daughter," they stated. Then the mate of the Alpha.

 My voice calm, I responded, "I am." "And you will tell me what you know about the plans of the competing pack."
