The final stretch of Drake's journey took him through treacherous mountain passes, where icy winds howled and snow blanketed the ground. Clunky, though sturdy, struggled in the deep snow, forcing Drake to dismount and lead her for much of the way. The air grew thinner with each upward step, making it harder to breathe.
As he rounded a particularly sharp bend in the path, the Voidwatch fortress came into view. It was a massive structure, built into the side of a sheer cliff face. Its walls were made of dark, imposing stone, and several tall towers rose above the main structure, their tops shrouded in swirling mist.
But what Drake saw made his heart sink. The fortress was in ruins. Large sections of the walls had been destroyed, leaving gaping holes in its defenses. One of the towers had completely collapsed, its rubble spilling down the mountainside. Smoke still rose from some of the damaged areas, and a dark, ominous energy hung over the entire fortress.
*Notification: "Location Discovered: Voidwatch Fortress (Ruined). Extreme Threat Level."*
Drake approached cautiously, his senses on high alert. The silence was deafening, broken only by the howling wind and the distant roar of a waterfall. There was no sign of life, no guards patrolling the walls, no flags flying from the towers. The fortress was eerily deserted.
He led Clunky to a sheltered area near the base of the cliff and tethered her securely. He then drew his short sword and approached the fortress entrance, which was now a gaping hole in the wall.
As he stepped through the ruined entrance, he felt a wave of cold, dark energy wash over him. The air inside the fortress was heavy with a sense of dread and despair. The ground was littered with rubble, broken furniture, and other debris.
He activated *Sense Magic*, and the chaotic energy he had felt earlier intensified. It seemed to emanate from the heart of the fortress, from deep within its ruined structure. He also detected faint traces of other magical energies, remnants of defensive spells and other enchantments that had been shattered by the attack.
*Notification: "Multiple Magical Signatures Detected: Void Magic, Defensive Enchantments (Shattered), Unknown Energy Signature (Potent and Chaotic)."*
Drake moved deeper into the fortress, navigating through the ruined corridors and crumbling rooms. He found signs of a fierce battle: scorch marks on the walls, shattered weapons, and even some skeletal remains scattered among the rubble.
He also found evidence of the Voidwatch's research: shattered bookshelves, scattered scrolls, and broken magical devices. He picked up a few of the scrolls, but they were mostly damaged and illegible.
As he explored further, he came across a large chamber that appeared to have been some kind of library or study. The room was mostly destroyed, but a few bookshelves remained intact. He approached one of the bookshelves and began to search for any surviving texts.
He found a few intact scrolls, their contents written in a language he didn't recognize. He also found a small, leather-bound journal, its pages filled with neat handwriting. He opened the journal and began to read.
The journal belonged to a Voidwatch mage named Eldrin. It detailed the order's research into the Voidlands, the chaotic rift, and the strange energies that connected them. It also mentioned the powerful magical anomaly that Drake had sensed earlier, describing it as a "tear in reality," a gateway to another dimension.
The last entry in the journal was dated just a few days before the attack. It spoke of a growing sense of unease within the fortress, a feeling that something terrible was about to happen. It also mentioned a strange dream that Eldrin had had, a dream of a dark figure emerging from the rift, a figure of immense power and malice.
Drake felt a chill run down his spine. He had a feeling that this dark figure was responsible for the attack on the fortress. And he had a feeling that he was about to come face to face with it.
