"Lucy?!"
David couldn't help being startled, nodding and replying, "We know each other, what's the matter?"
As soon as these words left his mouth, the expressions of everyone in Mann's team changed slightly.
Sasha, standing to the side, opened her mouth slightly in shock. "Really? What a coincidence!"
"Lucy said she has a new partner. Is it really you?"
Mann didn't waste time and asked straight to the point.
David was stunned by the question. He hadn't expected that little Lucy had already announced him as her partner!
"Well, Lucy and I have worked together once before, so I guess we can consider ourselves partners."
"Hey, hey, how is it? How is it?"
As soon as David finished speaking, Pila shouted loudly and ran over from the other side of the dance floor, covering her face. "Damn it, dancing like that in public is so disgusting! I'll never bet like this again!"
"What do you think of this situation? Lucy's partner really can't be this guy, right?"
Everyone in Mann's team looked at Pila and nodded silently.
"Oh my god!"
Pila covered her head in disbelief, sat at the bar, and looked closely at David. "Is this for real? Why did Lucy pick this kid as her partner?"
"Is he handsomer than me? Okay, I admit it."
"Is he good at fighting? Well, he seems to know a few tricks."
Saying this, Pila looked David up and down carefully.
"But this kid doesn't have any implants on him, and his body is so thin it's hard to see at first glance."
"Lucy wouldn't team up with a rookie who has no implants. Why would she choose him?"
Mann nodded in agreement, then leaned in front of David. "Yeah, why?!"
For a moment, the two men came close and stared at David.
The situation became a little awkward.
David quickly realized what was going on. If Sasha from Mann's team was still alive, it meant that Lucy had not joined them yet.
And based on the tone of Mann and the others, they were still in the process of trying to recruit Lucy.
If this were the original timeline, later, when Sasha died during a mission, Lucy would take over the role of hacker in the team.
David hadn't expected to cross paths with Lucy like this, causing the original world timeline to shift.
"Maybe Lucy saw my potential?" David shrugged and answered casually.
"Hahaha—potential?!"
Mann couldn't help but laugh a little. His face grew serious as he replied, "Kid, let me tell you, there are many people with potential in Night City."
"It's just that their potential hasn't been explored, and they've already ended up in the graveyard."
"You don't need potential in Night City."
"What you need is strength!"
"That's right, kid!"
Pila looked mischievous and pointed at David. "Although Rogge appreciates you, I think someone like you, a rookie without a decent team, can't handle big jobs in Night City."
"I advise you to leave Lucy to us. Our team will let her use her talents the right way!"
"Who says I don't have a team?"
David raised his eyebrows and pointed at Jack beside him. "No, Jack is also a member of our team."
Having proven himself in front of Rogge, if any mission came up later, a top hacker like Lucy couldn't be left out!
As soon as those words came out, Mann and his team were shocked.
Even Jack himself was taken by surprise!
"Ah, me?!"
After a moment of excitement, Jack quickly nodded. "Yeah, David and I are also on the same team. Who said we don't have a team?"
Mann frowned and asked, "What's your team called?"
"David."
David answered without hesitation. "Our team is called 'david'!"
"Hahaha—what is that?"
Pila burst out laughing, grinning. "Qin?! You named the team after yourself? You're so casual!"
David didn't mind Pila's teasing at all, his gaze still fixed on Mann.
After all, the big guy in front of him was the leader of Mann's team.
"Qin…"
Mann said in a low voice, his expression serious. "Alright, I don't care if you really have a team, but I still hope you'll let Lucy join us."
"After all, working in Night City isn't just some house game where you can form a team on a whim."
With that, Mann subconsciously glanced at David's arm. "The punch you gave the Beast Gang just now was pretty impressive. You do have potential. Maybe you should consider joining our team with Lucy?"
It was clear that Mann wanted to recruit both David and Lucy into his team.
"I'm not interested, for now."
David didn't hesitate, smiling as he declined.
A mercenary team like Mann's was essentially a low-level crew taking on missions through middlemen. Even if they spent their entire lives doing this, they'd never become the true kings of Night City!
David was different.
He didn't want to be under the thumb of big corporations like Arasaka or Military Technology.
Since he had extraordinary abilities, he wanted his future to be in his own hands, not someone else's!
Mann was taken aback by David's firm stance.
After a brief silence, Mann suddenly stood up. "Kid, it's fine to have your own ideas, but I still suggest you think carefully about this."
With that, Mann turned to leave.
"Mann, wait."
Just then, David called out.
"Hmm?!"
Mann paused and looked back at David. "What? Have you changed your mind?"
"Not really."
David shook his head and then asked, "I just want to know, have you received a task from a biotechnology company recently?"
As soon as those words left his mouth, the expressions of Mann's team shifted!
They had just discussed the biotechnology task earlier that day at Lai Sheng Bar. There was absolutely no way anyone else would know about it!
Why was David asking about this?
Noticing the sudden shift in the team's demeanor, David realized what was happening.
"You don't have to be nervous," he quickly added. "I'm not implying anything."
"I just want to remind you that even though biotechnology is just a medical company, you should still be cautious when taking on tasks from them."
"As you just said, working in Night City isn't some simple game. If you're not careful, you could lose your life."
What Mann had said was true!
David didn't forget to look at Sasha with a hint of meaning in his gaze.
In the original timeline, the sweet and kind hacker, Sasha, had died during a seemingly easy biotechnology mission because she had underestimated the danger.
David was warning them, especially for Sasha's sake. It would be such a waste for her to die so easily!
Of course, that was all David's part in it. Whether Mann, Sasha, and the others took his warning seriously was entirely up to them!
With that, David smiled slightly and said, "Hope to see you again next time."
Mann stared at David for a long moment.
Finally, without saying a word, he waved his hand. "Let's go."
He turned and walked toward the exit, with Dorio, Pila, and the others following suit.
The two young girls, Sasha and Rebecca, looked back at David, seemingly lost in their thoughts.
When Mann and his team had left, Jack asked curiously, "Hey, David, you were joking when you said we're a team, right?"
"Why? Don't you want to?"
"Of course I do!"
Jack nodded quickly. "But, you said our team is called 'david.' Isn't that a bit too casual? Why not call it 'david & Jack' or something?"
"No, calling the team 'david' is not casual."
David chuckled. "In the Dragon Kingdom, one emperor ruled for thousands of years, and the empire was always known as 'david.' We'll build our own empire here in Night City!"
