Vine spitters

After catching their breath from the intense fight, they moved deeper into the gate's strange jungle. The oppressive darkness of the Gloomfangs' territory faded behind them, giving way to a lush and vibrant environment.

The air grew warmer, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming flowers. Towering trees formed a dense canopy above, with sunlight filtering through cracks in the leaves. Bushes and vines sprawled across the ground, their emerald-green tendrils weaving through the forest-like veins. Brightly colored flowers dotted the area, their petals glistening as if sprinkled with dew.

"This is... unexpected," Caleb said, glancing around with a mixture of awe and suspicion.

"Don't let the scenery fool you"

Leo warned, his eyes scanning the dense vegetation ahead. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword, ready for anything. "This is the habitat of Vine Spitters. They're not as aggressive as the Gloomfangs, but they're ambush predators. They'll strike when you least expect it."

The group froze, their gazes darting around the dense forest. The sound grew louder, and sharper until a long, vine-like creature slithered out from the shadows of a nearby bush.

The Vine Spitter was a grotesque hybrid of plant and predator. Its body was a writhing mass of thick, green vines that twisted and coiled with unnatural precision. Thin, thorn-like appendages sprouted along its sides, glistening with an oily, dark liquid. At the front, its head resembled a grotesque flower with jagged, petal-like mandibles that pulsated menacingly. A single bulbous eye sat at the center, glowing faintly with a sickly yellow hue.

In an instant, the Vine Spitter reared back and launched a glob of dark green liquid at them. The projectile whizzed through the air, aiming directly at Jerry. His sharp reflexes kicked in, and he dodged with a quick, calculated roll to the side. The poison splattered onto the ground where he'd been standing, sizzling against the dirt and releasing a faint, acrid smoke.

"Poison!" Jerry shouted, his voice edged with urgency.

Before anyone could react, Caleb thrust his wand forward, the tip flaring with bright orange light. A fireball erupted from the wand, hurtling toward the Vine Spitter. The creature hissed loudly, its vines curling inward as it leaped up with unnatural agility, clinging to a nearby tree trunk. It scuttled higher, its bulbous eye fixed on it.

"Annoying little thing!" Caleb muttered, readying another spell.

The Vine Spitter retaliated, launching another glob of poison. This time, Jerry stepped forward, his energy shield materializing in front of him. The poison splattered against the shield, creating an audible

*hiss*

Jerry grunted as the shield flickered, the poison visibly eating away at its integrity "This poison is strong" he called out, bracing himself as the shield wavered.

Leo didn't waste time. He darted forward, his enhanced speed carrying him through the dense undergrowth. His eyes were locked on the Vine Spitter clinging to the tree. But before he could get close, another glob of poison streaked toward him from the side.

A second Vine Spitter emerged from the bushes, its coiled body blending seamlessly with the foliage. The sudden attack forced Leo to pivot, narrowly avoiding the projectile. The poison splashed against a nearby tree, the bark sizzling and blackening on contact.

"Another one!" Leo growled, his grip tightening on his sword.

Mia, perched a few feet away with her bow already drawn, spotted the second Vine Spitter and loosed an arrow. The enhanced arrow flew with precision, but the Vine Spitter was faster. It jumped to the tree, the arrow burying itself harmlessly into the trunk.

"They keep moving!" Mia said through gritted teeth, quickly nocking another arrow. She aimed for the first Vine Spitter this time, but it too jumped, vanishing into the dense canopy. Her next shot zipped past its target, striking nothing but leaves.

"They're toying with us!" Caleb shouted, frustration mounting as he sent another fireball into the trees. The spell illuminated the area briefly, but the Vine Spitters had already scattered, their movements a blur among the dense branches.

Meanwhile, the first Vine Spitter reappeared, wrapping itself around a higher branch. It hissed loudly, launching another glob of poison. Jerry intercepted it again, raising his shield, but the damage was beginning to take its toll. The shield's glow dimmed further, and cracks began to spiderweb across its surface.

"Leo, any idea?" Jerry called out, his voice strained as he held his ground.

"Yes!…" Leo replied, scanning the trees as his mind raced. "But first, we need to flush them out. They're using the trees as cover, and we can't keep up if we're spread thin like this."

Another Vine Spitter launched its attack, this time from behind. Mia spun around and fired another arrow, but the shot went wide as the creature darted to another tree.

"They're too fast!" Mia snapped, her frustration evident. She loosed another arrow, but the dense canopy and the Vine Spitters' erratic movements made it nearly impossible to land a hit.

Leo clenched his jaw, his patience wearing thin and thin rash second. Every time they tried to close the distance, the Vine Spitters retreated, using the trees to their advantage. Their constant movement and the abundance of cover made them infuriating opponents.

As another glob of poison splattered dangerously close to Caleb, the group huddled closer together, their frustration mounting. The Vine Spitters continued their relentless hit-and-run tactics, their hisses echoing through the forest like mocking laughter.

"This is getting ridiculous" Jerry muttered, his shield barely holding up.

"They're annoying as hell" Mia added, drawing another arrow but hesitating to fire. She knew it would likely miss.

"Enough of this!"
