Hearing that Vivienne was returning tomorrow, an inexplicable emotion welled up inside me.
But before I could dwell on it, my phone suddenly rang again.
"Mr. Winters, your mother is critically ill."
"She needs a massive blood transfusion right now."
"But New York City's supply of Rh-negative blood is insufficient."
"I'm afraid... your mother might not make it through the night!"
The doctor's urgent voice exploded in my ear.
I stood up, frantically rushing towards the door.
But it was locked from the outside.
They had done this.
I pulled at the door with all my might, veins bulging on my hands, but it didn't budge an inch.
In this critical moment, my phone battery died, shutting off completely.
Unable to open the door, I gripped my phone and walked towards the window.
The bar's private room was on the second floor, with an open balcony overlooking the pool on the ground floor.
It wasn't too high, but for me now, the pool was a nightmare.
I had nearly drowned before, losing my lower leg...
It was a terrifying ordeal.
But thinking of my mother fighting for her life in the hospital, I closed my eyes and took the leap.
Water rushed into my nose and mouth, the suffocating feeling of near-drowning hitting me again.
After a few struggles, I finally swam out of the pool.
Soaking wet, I ran towards the hospital.
The doctor pulled out several critical condition notices. I rigidly signed who knows how many of them.
Finally, the doctor told me that the blood bank was completely out of blood.
Even with the fastest delivery, blood wouldn't arrive until tomorrow.
But my mother simply couldn't wait that long.
With trembling hands, I picked up my fully charged phone and dialed Melody's number.
After a few rings, Melody's voice came through.
"Ah...Levi, be gentle, you're still sick."
On the other end was the sound of Melody's moans.
I clenched my back teeth, unable to stop myself from raising my voice.
"Melody, my mother urgently needs Rh negative blood. Please...help me."
Melody has Rh negative blood.
If she was willing to help, my mother might have a chance.
But a few seconds later, I heard Melody sneer.
"Then get on your knees and beg me!"
With that, she hung up and started a video call.
In the video, Melody's lips were swollen, her eyes filled with lust, leaning against Levi's chest.
I swallowed the bitterness, a bitter smile on my lips.
"If I kneel down, will you help me?"
"Alright then..."
With that, I held the phone at a distance and slowly knelt down at the busy entrance of the emergency room. "Melody, I'm on my knees. Can you please come to the hospital?"
But on the other end of the video call, Melody's expression changed.
Her willow-leaf eyebrows furrowed.
"Fintan, you really have no self-respect at all."
"Just looking at you now makes me sick!"
With a mocking curl of her lip, she hung up without hesitation.
At that moment, the emergency room doors opened.
I saw the doctor's eyes full of regret and guilt.
"We're very sorry, Mr. Winters. We couldn't save your mother."
My mother's body was temporarily kept at the hospital.
I returned to the ward like a walking corpse, sitting numbly through the night until a ray of sunlight crept in at dawn.
My phone buzzed again with a new message.
[Dear childhood sweetheart, I'll take good care of you during this illness.]
Melody had posted photos of herself taking care of Levi on social media.
Within minutes, there were nothing but well-wishes for them.
My gaze lingered on the location tag.
It was at the same hospital where my mother had been rushed to, less than 200 yards away.
I suddenly laughed out loud.
My heart couldn't muster even a ripple of emotion as I commented below.
[Wishing you a lifetime of happiness together.]
But in the comments, someone angrily accused me of being fake. Melody happened to like this comment.
She thought I was playing hard to get.
But she had no idea that I was about to become her aunt's lover.
Looking down at the flight information Vivienne had sent, I smiled sardonically.
Perhaps the next time we meet, she'll have to call me uncle.
