He stared intently at the sparse numbers on the white paper, as if trying to extract clues from between the lines.
Seeing this, Serena peeked out from behind Mr. Shaw and spoke in a soft, weak voice: "Soren, it's all my fault."
She hugged her shoulders, her eyes brimming with tears:
"Scarlett must have been angry with you, so she bought a fake death report online to trick you into coming back."
"You should go back. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. It's just hard on Auntie to have to worry about her at her age."
Mr. Shaw's anger flared up with just a few words, shaking his previous hesitation.
He tore up the death certificate in one swift motion, fuming:
"Scarlett's really smartened up! She's even learned to buy fake certificates to deceive me!"
"What do you take my mother for? Your maid? You know she's kind-hearted, so you force her to go along with your lies?"
