Seven years of love, hate, and resentment could finally be wiped clean.
As this thought struck me, my heart ached sharply.
When I came back to my senses, Mr. Shaw had already carried Serena to the hospital room.
The doctor said Serena only had superficial wounds, but Mr. Shaw still refused to leave her side.
His subordinate couldn't bear to watch and quietly reminded him, "Captain, your wife's not doing so well. Her leg was crushed after all. Don't you want to check on her?"
Mr. Shaw hesitated for a moment, but Serena immediately grabbed his hand pitifully:
"Mr. Shaw, I'm scared. I'm afraid I'll wake up and my leg will be gone. Can you stay with me?"
As she spoke, tears fell from her eyes, looking just like an injured little bunny.
Mr. Shaw's heart instantly softened, and he comforted her gently:
"Don't be afraid, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."
The subordinate was so anxious he started stomping his feet: "Captain, your wife's leg was crushed! Can't you at least go take a look?"
Mr. Shaw flew into an embarrassed rage: "What good would it do if I went? I'm not a doctor or a nurse. It's not like I can perform surgery on her!"
"Will her leg magically reattach itself if I go see her?"
Each word stabbed straight into my heart. For seven years, I've poured my heart and soul into keeping this family together, and in the end, I can't even get a single visit from him.
Mr. Shaw, you're free to pursue your true love openly now.
There's no longer this "ball and chain" holding you back in this world.
The subordinate left in anger.
Just then, Mr. Shaw's phone rang. It was my mother-in-law calling.
"Mr. Shaw, where are you? Come to the hospital quickly to see Scarlett!"
My mother-in-law was sobbing, barely able to catch her breath. Hearing her, I felt a lump in my throat.
She always said that my life was given by her family, and she protected me at every turn, treating me even better than her own son.
I had promised to take her on a trip this weekend, but it looks like I'll have to break that promise now.
Just as Mr. Shaw was about to speak, Serena immediately threw herself into his arms.
"Mom, I'm on a mission. I really can't get away."
"But..."
Before my mother-in-law could finish, Mr. Shaw swiftly hung up the phone.
I laughed at myself bitterly.
See, they're deeply in love. If I don't die, I'd just be the inconsiderate one.
Serena tightly hugged Mr. Shaw's waist and said through her sobs:
"Mr.Shaw, I envy Scarlett so much. She has family and friends, and even the housekeeper cares for her. You're all I have.
Can you promise not to leave me? What would I do if you abandoned me one day?
Mr. Shaw's hand lifted then lowered, but ultimately came to rest gently on Serena's shoulder.
For the past few days, he had stayed by Serena's bedside, never leaving her side.
Every day, he clumsily brushed her hair and washed her face, even personally laundering her intimates.
Like a pathetic thief, I hid in the corner, spying on my husband's unabashed love for another woman.
My heart was filled with an indescribable bitterness.
I remember when I had a high fever that wouldn't break, I begged Mr. Shaw to boil some water for me, but he refused.
With tears in my eyes, I asked him why he couldn't care for me just once, and he dismissively replied:
"I'm a man with lofty aspirations. I don't know how to take care of people."
Watching him now, frantically searching the internet and fussing over Serena, I finally understood.
There's no such thing as a man with lofty aspirations who can't care for others. He's perfectly capable of taking care of someone.
It's just that person was never me.
On the third day, my best friend Britta arrived at the hospital with my death certificate.
"You monster!Scarlett is still lying alone in the morgue, and here you two are canoodling!"
As soon as she entered, Britta slapped Mr. Shaw hard across the face.
Caught off guard, Mr. Shaw's cheek instantly swelled and reddened, but he gritted his teeth and swallowed his anger:
"Scarlett is your best friend. You should at least show her some respect. Is it appropriate for you to constantly curse her and wish her dead?"
"Scarlett is your wife. When she was fighting for her life, you were nowhere to be found. Instead, you're here comforting your mistress. Do you think that's appropriate?"
