After the rumbling subsided, an oppressive silence filled the temple. Anya stared at the altar, now cracked, as the energy radiating from the artifact gradually dimmed. Kaelan stood beside her, his eyes scanning the surroundings warily. However, the old temple guardian looked more distressed than ever.
"This isn't like before," the old woman muttered, her voice barely audible in the heavy quiet. "The mountain… it's awakening."
Anya turned sharply, her gaze piercing. "What do you mean, the mountain is alive? How is that even possible?"
The guardian sighed deeply. "This mountain is no ordinary mountain. It's the core of this world, the center of balance between two dimensions. When Rheskhar appeared, he was just a small fragment of a much larger disturbance. The energy you released earlier... it has awakened something far greater and more unpredictable."
Kaelan gripped his sword tightly, as though ready for anything. "If the mountain awakens, does that mean it will become a threat to both worlds?"
The old woman didn't answer immediately. Her eyes remained fixed on the cracks in the altar, her expression unreadable. "The mountain has never been a threat… until humans and other beings began to disrupt the harmony of its nature. Its awakening may be the final warning. But if it isn't calmed…"
She left the sentence hanging, but Anya understood. This mountain, which was supposed to maintain balance, could destroy everything if its energy erupted uncontrollably.
Anya stepped closer to the cracked altar, unease knotting her chest. She could feel a strange pull from within the mountain, like a distant voice whispering. When she touched the altar, the mark on her hand glowed again, but this time the light flickered, unstable—like a flame about to extinguish.
"There's something beneath this mountain," Anya murmured. "Something calling out to me."
Kaelan looked at her with concern. "What are you feeling?"
"A voice," Anya replied hesitantly. "Like… a whisper. But it's unclear. It feels like someone is trying to tell me something."
The guardian stared at her intently. "Then you must go to the mountain's core. It's the only way to understand what's truly happening."
Kaelan frowned. "You can't be serious. The core of the mountain is a dangerous place, even for someone like me."
The old woman turned to him. "You, of all people, know that this is the only choice. If we don't understand what's happening at the core, we'll never be able to stop the destruction that's coming."
The Journey Into the Mountain
After a brief discussion, Anya and Kaelan decided to descend through a hidden passage beneath the altar. The guardian gave them an ancient map that showed the route to the mountain's core. The tunnel was dark and narrow, with walls etched with glowing ancient carvings that lit their path.
"These carvings tell the legend of Mount Sambo," Kaelan said, running his hand over one of the walls. "It's said the mountain was born from the tears of the gods when the world was first created. They made this mountain to act as a protector between the real world and the parallel dimension."
Anya examined the carvings closely, her curiosity piqued. In one section, she saw an image of a woman with a glowing mark on her hand, much like hers. The woman stood before the mountain, as though she was its guardian.
"Is that… me?" Anya murmured.
Kaelan nodded slightly. "Perhaps you've been part of this destiny from the start. But we still don't know why."
As they continued their journey, the tunnel grew darker, and the air colder. Anya felt a pressure in her chest, as though the mountain itself was watching their every step.
Suddenly, a rumbling noise echoed around them. The ground beneath them trembled, and from the darkness emerged a shadowy creature larger and more terrifying than anything they'd encountered before.
"Stop!" boomed the creature, its eyes glowing red like fire.
Kaelan immediately drew his sword, but the creature didn't attack. Instead, it stood still, glaring at them with hateful eyes.
"What are you doing here?" the creature demanded in a deep, menacing voice.
Anya stepped forward, meeting its gaze with newfound courage. "We're here to understand what's happening to this mountain. If you know something, please tell us."
The creature laughed, its voice reverberating like clashing metal. "You will never understand what's truly happening. You're just weak mortals meddling with powers you can't comprehend."
"But I bear this mark," Anya said, showing her glowing hand. "I know it means something."
The creature fell silent for a moment, seemingly startled by the mark. "That mark… is the key."
"The key to what?" Anya pressed.
The creature didn't answer immediately. Instead, it moved aside, revealing a path that led deeper into the tunnel. "If you want to know the answer, continue your journey. But be warned—the truth you seek may be more terrifying than anything you've ever imagined."
The Encounter at the Mountain's Core
After what felt like hours of traveling, Anya and Kaelan finally reached a vast chamber at the mountain's core. The room was illuminated by a soft blue light emanating from a large pool in the center. Within the pool was a figure that resembled a human but whose body glowed like crystal.
The figure opened its eyes as Anya and Kaelan approached. "At last, you've arrived," it said, its voice like the sound of flowing water.
"Who are you?" Anya asked cautiously.
The figure smiled faintly. "I am the guardian of Mount Sambo's core. I have been waiting for your arrival, Anya. You are the heir to a lineage tasked with preserving the balance of this world."
Anya was stunned. "But I never knew about this. I didn't even know I had this mark until this journey began."
"That is because it's part of your destiny," the figure replied. "The mark only appears when this world is in great peril. And now, you must make a crucial decision."
Kaelan stepped forward, his brows furrowed. "What decision?"
The figure fixed its gaze on them, its expression grave. "The balance of this world has been disrupted. If it isn't restored, both worlds will collapse. But to restore balance, someone must become part of this mountain's core, sacrificing themselves to sustain harmony."
Anya felt her body freeze. "What do you mean? Someone has to… become the guardian of the core?"
The figure nodded. "Yes. And you, Anya, are the most suited for this role. But I cannot force you. This is a choice you must make on your own."
Kaelan immediately protested. "No. She can't do that. There has to be another way!"
"There is no other way," the figure replied firmly. "This is the only means to save both worlds."
Anya's heart pounded in her chest. The thought of sacrificing herself to become part of the mountain terrified her, but she also knew that if she didn't, the world would be destroyed.
Before she could respond, the pool suddenly trembled, and the figure in it looked alarmed. "Hurry! Rheskhar isn't fully defeated. He's trying to seize control of this core. You must act now!"
Anya and Kaelan exchanged a look. They knew this decision would change everything—and time was running out.
