A dense mist cloaked the village at the foot of Mount Sambo. The gentle rustling of the wind carried the scent of damp earth and morning dew, yet the village felt heavier than usual. The villagers, who had just witnessed the mountain's return to peace, were now gripped by unease. One question lingered in their minds: would this peace last?
Kaelan stood before the old temple, now softly glowing—a sign that Mount Sambo had accepted its new guardian. But despite his calm exterior, Kaelan's heart was in turmoil. Anya's sacrifice had left an enormous void within him. He had not only lost a comrade but also someone who had been a light in his darkened life.
As he stood lost in thought, an elderly man with a wooden staff approached him. It was Giri, the village chief, a leader known for his wisdom.
"Kaelan," he called in a raspy voice, "I know you carry a heavy burden. But the world won't stop for a single loss."
Kaelan turned, his eyes filled with guilt. "I couldn't protect her. She sacrificed herself for something that should've been my responsibility."
The chief shook his head slowly. "Sometimes, fate doesn't care about what we want. But you still have a duty here. The mountain may have calmed, but the threat isn't entirely gone."
Kaelan frowned. "What do you mean?"
The chief stepped closer, his voice lowering. "Something unusual is happening around the mountain. Some villagers reported hearing strange noises from the forest. And last night, a hunter saw a massive shadow moving under the moonlight."
A New Mystery Unfolds
That night, Kaelan decided to investigate himself. With a sword at his waist and a lantern in hand, he ventured into the forest. The thick mist shrouded the path, making each step feel like a journey into another world.
Suddenly, the sound of rustling came from behind him. Kaelan froze, drawing his sword.
"Who's there?" he called out firmly.
There was no answer, only the sound of the wind whispering through the leaves. But as he moved further, he saw something that made him stop in his tracks. Massive footprints were embedded in the wet earth—far too large for any human.
Kaelan crouched, examining the prints carefully. They were clawed, with scratch marks surrounding them. His mind immediately went to Rheskhar, but that creature had been destroyed. Or… was it?
His pace quickened, following the trail deeper into the forest. The further he went, the stranger the atmosphere became. The trees seemed to bow toward him, as if trying to block his way. The air grew colder, and strange noises began to echo—like whispers in a language he couldn't understand.
An Unexpected Encounter
Kaelan eventually arrived at a clearing surrounded by large stones. At the center stood a figure that seemed both familiar and foreign. It was a young woman dressed in a black cloak, her long hair flowing down her back. But most striking were her eyes—silver and glowing, much like the mark on Anya's hand.
"Who are you?" Kaelan demanded, raising his sword.
The woman gave a faint smile. "I am a part of something you've forgotten, Kaelan."
Kaelan frowned. "I've forgotten nothing. If you're a threat to this mountain, I won't hesitate to stop you."
"Wait," the woman said, raising her hand. "I am not your enemy. My name is Yelena, and I was the guardian before Anya."
Kaelan froze. "The previous guardian? That's impossible. If you were a guardian, why are you here? You should've merged with the mountain."
Yelena sighed. "That's what should have happened. But something is wrong with the balance. Anya's sacrifice should've been enough to restore harmony, but Rheskhar's dark essence still lingers in this world. And it's starting to corrupt the mountain's core."
Kaelan's heart raced. "What do you mean? Isn't Rheskhar destroyed?"
"His body, yes," Yelena replied. "But his essence remains. It has fused with a small part of the core, hiding deep within where even Anya couldn't reach it. Now, it's searching for a way to return."
A Cracked World
Kaelan couldn't believe what he was hearing. If Rheskhar's essence still existed, the danger they thought had ended was far from over.
"We need to warn the villagers," Kaelan said.
"No," Yelena replied firmly. "If they find out, it'll only cause panic. We need to resolve this before it becomes known."
Kaelan nodded slowly, though doubt filled his heart. "Alright. What do we do?"
Yelena raised her hand, revealing a glowing crystal fragment in her palm. It shimmered with the same energy as the mark on Anya's hand.
"This is a shard of an artifact once used to seal the mountain's core. If we can find the other fragments, we might destroy Rheskhar's essence for good."
"Wait," Kaelan said, realization dawning on him. "If there are other fragments, that means the artifact was destroyed. Why?"
Yelena hesitated before answering. "The first guardian shattered it. He believed its power was too dangerous to remain in anyone's hands, even the guardians'. But now, we have no choice but to use it again."
The Hunt Begins
Yelena explained that the other fragments were scattered across three locations: a dark chasm on the mountain's eastern side, a hidden cave behind a waterfall, and the ruins of a magical city in a parallel dimension.
"We must move quickly," Yelena said. "Every second wasted gives Rheskhar's essence more power."
Kaelan nodded, though his heart felt heavy. This journey would be more challenging than anything he'd faced before. But he knew he couldn't give up, especially after what Anya had sacrificed.
As they turned to leave the clearing, Kaelan felt something strange. A faint sound, almost like a whisper, reached his ears.
"Kaelan…"
He froze, his eyes widening. It was Anya's voice.
.........
"Kaelan?" Yelena turned, noticing his stillness. "What's wrong?"
Kaelan looked around, but nothing seemed different. Yet the voice came again, clearer this time.
"Kaelan… I'm still here."
He felt a warmth in his chest—a feeling he couldn't explain. "Anya?" he whispered.
Yelena watched him intently. "What do you hear?"
Kaelan shook his head, trying to make sense of what had just happened. "I… I heard her voice. Anya. She called out to me."
Yelena fell silent for a moment before speaking softly. "Maybe… she's not entirely gone. If Rheskhar's essence remains, perhaps a part of Anya's energy lingers as well."
Those words gave Kaelan newfound hope. Perhaps, just perhaps, this journey wasn't only about saving the world. Maybe there was a way to bring Anya back.
And with that, their journey began—filled with hope, fear, and mysteries far greater than they had ever imagined.
