Chapter 6

The room was filled with my favorite music, and the bathtub was brimming with hot water. It had been a long time since I'd enjoyed such a comfortable bath.

There was a period when I was particularly afraid of water. During that time, Garrison stayed by my side day and night.

Life before I turned eighteen was filled with my father's beatings and verbal abuse, saturated with tears and pain.

My father was a gambler, and he used everything of value in our home to pay off his debts.

Whenever he won money, he'd stay away from home for long stretches. Those were the happiest days for my mom and me. She'd use the money she'd saved to secretly take me out for food and to the amusement park while dad was gone.

She would always gently stroke my head, telling me not to grow up too fast.

Dad only came home when he lost money. At first, he'd ask nicely for cash, but when he couldn't get any, he'd take his frustrations out on mom and me.
