Days turned into weeks, and Lin Yun's body began to show signs of the unrelenting strain he had put it through. His muscles had hardened, his endurance had improved, and though his bones still ached, there was a growing sense of power within him. Yet, despite his progress, he couldn't shake the looming presence of the Shen family.
Shen Kai.
The name had become a thorn in Lin Yun's side. Since the incident that had left his Qi Core shattered, Shen Kai, the young master of the Shen family, had made no secret of his disdain for Lin Yun. The cruel, arrogant heir to the family had watched as Lin Yun's cultivation progress stagnated, reveling in his downfall. Shen Kai's actions had been the direct cause of Lin Yun's current plight, and for that, Lin Yun had sworn vengeance.
It was the day of the Lin family's annual gathering that Lin Yun first saw Shen Kai again.
The gathering was a grand event, held in the main hall of the Lin estate. Members of the family, as well as important allies, came to discuss matters of cultivation, politics, and future ventures. Lin Yun had never been a fan of these gatherings. They were filled with empty words and posturing, where power and influence were the true currency. But today, he couldn't avoid it.
His father, Lin Zhen, had insisted that he attend, perhaps as a reminder of the family's expectation to carry on the Lin legacy. Lin Yun could only sigh as he stood before the polished stone pillars, his expression neutral, his thoughts elsewhere.
At the center of the hall, an imposing figure walked in—Shen Kai. His presence immediately drew the attention of everyone present. With his sharp features, regal posture, and a faint aura of arrogance, it was clear that Shen Kai was the heir to the most powerful martial family in the region.
He strode across the hall with the confidence of a predator, his eyes scanning the room with a calculating gaze. When his eyes landed on Lin Yun, a cruel smile spread across his face.
"So, the cripple has decided to show up?" Shen Kai's voice rang out, carrying the edge of mockery.
The room fell silent. Lin Yun stood unmoving, not allowing his anger to show. He had learned to mask his emotions in this life, but it didn't stop the burning hatred that welled up within him. Shen Kai's jealousy had caused everything—his loss, his fall from grace, the destruction of his Qi Core—and now, he stood in the spotlight as if nothing had happened.
"I'm here to fulfill my duty," Lin Yun replied coolly, keeping his voice steady.
"Duty?" Shen Kai laughed, the sound sharp and cruel. "What duty? You don't even have a future to speak of. You're a shadow of what you could have been. A mere memory of a once-promising talent."
Lin Yun's fists clenched at his sides. The words cut deeper than he cared to admit. Shen Kai knew exactly where to strike.
"I'd be careful, Shen Kai," Lin Yun said, his voice low, almost a whisper. "One day, you might regret underestimating me."
Shen Kai's eyes narrowed at the threat, but the smile didn't leave his face. "Regret? You can barely move without collapsing from exhaustion, and you think you'll be a threat to me?"
Before Lin Yun could respond, a servant entered the room, bowing deeply. "Young Master Lin, the head of the Shen family has arrived."
Lin Yun's gaze shifted to Shen Kai, who grinned and made his way to the main table. His father, Lin Zhen, motioned for Lin Yun to follow him, but Lin Yun couldn't shake the feeling of resentment that had bubbled to the surface.
He knew that the upcoming years would be filled with challenges, both from external threats and from the weight of family expectations. But one thing was certain—Shen Kai's presence in his life would never be forgotten.
Later that evening, as the gathering wound down, Lin Yun slipped out of the main hall, feeling a heavy weight on his chest. The sting of Shen Kai's words still lingered in his mind. Yet, amidst the hurt, there was something else—a quiet resolve, a growing fire.
Shen Kai was right about one thing—Lin Yun had no future in the traditional sense. His Qi Core was gone, and his path had been shattered. But he wasn't going to let that define him.
There was still the Body Refinement Technique. There was still a way forward, even if it meant a road that no one had walked before.
Lin Yun's thoughts were interrupted as he walked through the courtyard, his footsteps light despite the weight on his mind. A familiar figure emerged from the shadows.
"Yun," Lin Mei said softly, her voice full of concern. "Are you all right?"
Lin Yun paused, his gaze softening as he turned to her. He hadn't realized how tightly his fists were clenched until he relaxed them, allowing the tension to leave his body.
"I'll be fine," he said, forcing a smile. "I just need to keep pushing forward. I can't afford to be weak."
Lin Mei stepped closer, her brow furrowed. "You don't have to do this alone, Yun. I don't want to see you suffer."
Lin Yun shook his head, his smile fading. "I appreciate it, Mei. But this is something I need to do on my own. I can't keep relying on others. Not anymore."
She hesitated before nodding, her expression softening. "I understand. But promise me one thing—don't lose yourself in this fight. You're still my brother, no matter what happens."
Lin Yun's heart clenched at her words, but he kept his composure. "I won't. I'll find my way. I promise."
As he stood alone in the courtyard, Lin Yun couldn't help but think of Shen Kai. The arrogant young master who had ruined his life was still out there, living without a care in the world. But Lin Yun wasn't the same as before. He had no Qi Core, no family legacy to fall back on. What he did have, however, was a burning desire to prove that even a person like him could rise above.
One day, Shen Kai would regret crossing him. And when that day came, Lin Yun would be ready.
