Chapter 6: The Awakening of Fate

The soft shuffle of footsteps echoed through the hallway, growing louder as they approached the room where Lin Tian lay. He quickly sat upright, his heart pounding. His mind was still spinning from the strange events—the system, the black flame, the mysterious energy surging through him. He clenched his fists and looked at the door, his instincts screaming at him to be on guard.

The woman entered, her expression a mixture of hesitation and tension. She carried an air of authority, but there was an uncharacteristic unease in her movements. Her eyes locked onto Lin Tian, and she froze mid-step.

He was no longer the frail, injured boy she had left earlier. His burns were gone, his skin smooth and unblemished. His eyes, although no longer glowing red, carried an intensity that made her take an involuntary step back.

"You..." she began, her voice faltering. "How are you healed? The talismans... they..."

Lin Tian smirked, though inwardly he was as confused as she was. He wasn't about to let her know that, though. Something about her earlier actions—the humiliation, the fire talisman, the way she had looked at him with disdain—lit a flame of defiance in his heart. He wouldn't show weakness again, not to her or anyone else.

"I guess I'm just not as weak as you thought," Lin Tian said, his voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions inside him.

Her brow furrowed. She didn't respond immediately, instead stepping closer to examine him. She stopped a few feet away, her gaze scrutinizing him like a predator assessing its prey.

"What are you?" she demanded, her voice sharper this time. "No one could have survived that fire talisman, let alone healed completely in such a short time. And that power earlier... the black flame..."

Lin Tian tilted his head, feigning innocence. "What can I say? Maybe I'm special."

Her fists clenched, and for a moment, it seemed like she might strike him again. But instead, she inhaled deeply, regaining her composure. She couldn't afford to lose control, not now.

"You're hiding something," she said coldly, her eyes narrowing. "That much is obvious. But whatever you are, you're dangerous. That black flame… it's not natural."

Lin Tian shrugged. "You're the one who brought me here. If you're so scared, maybe you should've left me to die."

Her jaw tightened, but she didn't respond. Instead, she stepped closer, ignoring the warning signals screaming in her mind. She had to know what was going on with him.

Without a word, she extended her hand and placed it on his chest, channeling her Qi once more to examine his body. Lin Tian flinched but didn't stop her. He needed answers too.

As her Qi flowed into him, she gasped. The black hole-like structure she had sensed earlier was still there, but now it seemed even more active, pulsating with an ominous energy that consumed everything around it. Her spiritual senses recoiled, but she forced herself to probe deeper.

And then it happened again.

The soul mark on her forehead flared to life, burning as if it were reacting to his presence. Her breath hitched, and she stumbled back, clutching her head.

"What... is this?" she muttered, her voice trembling.

Lin Tian watched her, confused but intrigued. He had no idea what she was experiencing, but it was clear that something about him was affecting her deeply.

She looked up at him, her face pale. "That mark… the one that appeared earlier... it's connected to you, isn't it?"

Lin Tian frowned. "Mark? What are you talking about?"

She shook her head, taking another step back. "This can't be happening. A soul mark… it binds the fates of two people together. But why... why would it appear for someone like you?"

Lin Tian's eyes widened. "Bind fates? What does that even mean?"

She didn't answer. Her mind was racing, trying to make sense of what was happening. A soul mark was a rare and ancient phenomenon, something that tied two individuals' destinies together, often in ways they couldn't control. But for it to happen with this boy, of all people...

Her hands trembled as she stared at him. "You... You're cursed," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lin Tian's expression darkened. "Cursed?"

"You carry a power that shouldn't exist," she continued, her voice shaking. "That black flame… that mark... it's not natural. It's dangerous. And now it's tied to me."

Lin Tian stood, his body still sore but functional. He met her gaze, his voice calm but filled with an edge of defiance. "I didn't ask for this. Whatever's happening to me, I didn't choose it. But if you think I'm just going to roll over and die because of some curse, you're wrong."

Her eyes widened slightly at his words. Despite her fear, she couldn't help but feel a strange admiration for his resolve.

But before she could respond, another ding sounded in Lin Tian's mind.

Ding!

Lin Tian's head spun as the words appeared. He barely had time to process them before they faded, leaving him with more questions than answers.

The woman noticed the change in his expression and narrowed her eyes. "What now?"

"Nothing you'd understand," Lin Tian said, brushing past her. "But if you're so scared of me, maybe you should keep your distance."

She grabbed his arm, stopping him. Her grip was firm, but there was a hint of desperation in her eyes. "You think this is just about me being scared? Whatever that power is, it's going to attract attention—dangerous attention. If you don't learn to control it, you'll be hunted. And so will I, because of this soul mark."

Lin Tian looked at her, his expression unreadable. For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, he smirked. "Guess you're stuck with me, then."

Her cheeks flushed, and she released his arm, stepping back. "Don't get the wrong idea. I'll help you learn to control this power, but only because I have no choice. If your recklessness gets me killed, I'll make sure you regret it."

Lin Tian chuckled softly. "Fair enough."

As she turned away, he clenched his fists, his mind racing. Whatever this system was, whatever this strange power inside him, he knew one thing: his life would never be the same.

Lin Tian sat cross-legged on the cold stone floor, his eyes shut tight. He was supposed to be meditating, but the pulse of the black flame within him made it impossible to focus. It wasn't just the strange energy coursing through his veins—it was Su Yan's presence. He could feel her eyes on him, sharp and assessing, and it was both distracting and intriguing.

Su Yan stood a few feet away, arms crossed as she observed him. She had been trying to push aside the strange emotions swirling in her chest, but Lin Tian wasn't making it easy. Every time she looked at him, she was reminded of that moment—the black flame erupting, the soul mark, and the terrifying power she had glimpsed in his eyes. And yet, there was something else now, something... unsettlingly human about the way he grinned and teased her.

With a sigh, Su Yan cleared her throat. "You're not focusing," she said sharply.

Lin Tian opened one eye, smirking at her. "How can I, with you staring at me like that? It's distracting."

Her cheeks flushed, but she quickly masked it with a glare. "Stop making excuses. If you want to survive, you need to take this seriously. That flame inside you—it's not something you can control with sheer willpower. You need discipline, focus, and—"

"Patience?" Lin Tian interrupted, his tone teasing. "Because I'm starting to think you're the one who needs that."

Su Yan's jaw tightened, and she took a step closer. "Do you ever stop talking?"

"Not when I'm having this much fun." Lin Tian grinned, leaning back on his hands.

Su Yan exhaled sharply, clearly trying to keep her temper in check. "Fine," she said, her voice icy. "If you're so confident, let's see how you handle this."

She raised her hand, and a glowing blue talisman appeared between her fingers. With a flick of her wrist, it activated, and a wave of energy surged toward Lin Tian.

His eyes widened as the energy enveloped him, pinning him in place. It wasn't painful, but it was intense, like a heavy weight pressing down on him from all sides.

"What the—" he began, but Su Yan cut him off.

"This is a Qi-binding technique," she explained, her tone brisk. "It's designed to suppress your energy and force you to focus inward. If you want to break free, you'll need to channel your Qi properly. Consider this... motivation."

Lin Tian struggled against the invisible force, gritting his teeth. "Motivation, huh? Feels more like you're just enjoying this."

Su Yan's lips twitched, as though she were suppressing a smile. "Maybe a little," she admitted. "But if you want to keep teasing me, you'll have to earn the right."

Lin Tian smirked despite the pressure bearing down on him. "Challenge accepted."

He closed his eyes, forcing himself to concentrate. The black flame within him pulsed faintly, as though it were responding to his determination. He tried to reach for it, to channel it the way Su Yan had described, but it was slippery, elusive, like trying to grasp smoke.

Su Yan watched him closely, her expression softening despite herself. There was a strange beauty to the way he struggled—not just physically, but mentally. He was stubborn, defiant, but also undeniably driven.

"Focus on your breathing," she said after a moment, her voice gentler. "Let the energy flow naturally. Don't try to force it."

Lin Tian nodded slightly, following her advice. He took a deep breath, then another, and gradually, the weight pressing down on him began to ease. The black flame flickered inside him, stronger now, and for a brief moment, he felt like he was in control.

Then it flared.

The energy surged outward, shattering the Qi-binding technique with a burst of heat. Su Yan stepped back, shielding her face as the wave of black flame filled the room.

When the energy subsided, Lin Tian was standing, his breathing heavy but his expression triumphant. "Told you I could handle it," he said, his voice laced with a mix of exhaustion and pride.

Su Yan lowered her arm, staring at him in disbelief. "You... actually did it."

"Was there ever any doubt?" Lin Tian grinned, but his legs gave out, and he collapsed to the floor.

Su Yan rushed to his side, kneeling beside him. "Idiot," she muttered, though there was no real malice in her tone. "You pushed yourself too hard."

Lin Tian looked up at her, his grin softening into a smile. "Guess I wanted to impress you."

Her cheeks flushed again, and she quickly looked away. "Don't flatter yourself," she said, though her voice lacked its usual sharpness.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. Su Yan's hand hovered over his chest, her Qi scanning his body to make sure he hadn't injured himself. As her energy flowed through him, she felt a strange warmth—not just from the black flame, but from him.

Lin Tian watched her, his expression uncharacteristically serious. "Su Yan," he said softly.

She looked at him, startled by the sudden change in his tone. "What is it?"

"Thanks," he said simply. "For helping me, I mean. Even after everything that happened."

Su Yan's eyes softened, and for a brief moment, the tension between them seemed to melt away. But then she shook her head, standing abruptly.

"Don't read too much into it," she said, turning away. "I'm only helping you because I don't have a choice. That soul mark... it's as much a curse for me as it is for you."

Lin Tian sighed, sitting up. "You keep saying that, but I don't think you really believe it."

Su Yan froze, her back to him. She didn't respond, and after a moment, she walked toward the door.

"Rest," she said without looking back. "We'll continue tomorrow."

As the door closed behind her, Lin Tian leaned back against the wall, his mind racing. He didn't understand what was happening between them, but he couldn't deny that Su Yan fascinated him.

And judging by the way she had looked at him just now, he wasn't the only one feeling the pull.
