The Consequences Of Failure

The room went silent.

Everyone present knew the amount was astronomical. Even for a wealthy noble like Vesper, a million gold coins was far beyond what most could afford to wager in a mere bet.

Vesper hesitated, but Ren saw the flicker of pride in his eyes. The need to not back down in front of so many onlookers. That would be his undoing.

Ren folded his arms. "What's wrong, Vesper? Too poor to match my bet? Or are you scared?"

That did it.

Vesper's jaw clenched before he forced a confident grin. "Fine. But don't forget. If you lose, you die."

The dull roar of the crowd filled the chamber as they began discussing what had just happened. They'd just witness a wager that would be spoken of for years to come.

A million gold coins or a life. Who would lose?

Thorn tensed beside Ren. "Ren—"

But Ren didn't hesitate. He extended his hand, meeting Vesper's gaze. "Agreed."

They shook hands, sealing the deal.
