According to Ana, Oliver was a snotty little son of a b*tch who gave everyone hell for no reason and nothing was ever enough for him. In fact, she wondered if he was secretly a psychopath.
He was well known for his cold, eccentric personality and he never opened his mouth for anything other than demeaning or belittling someone. But people tend to forgive him easily because of that handsome face of his and the obvious amount of wealth he owns.
They say that inner beauty reflects on the outside, but that didn't seem to be true for Oliver. He always looked dashing and perfect and that only pissed her off more.
Ana was about to reach her cubicle when a sweet voice boomed behind her, "Hey everyone.. Hope you are ready for the big day !!".
And that was Lucas. He was the sweetest assistant of Oliver who had been working with him from a long time.
Lucas grinned widely, noticing that Ana finally made it to the office. His big brown eyes lit up and he came towards her cubicle.
"Hey, you…..", he said all charming and handsome.
Yes, Ana was very much in love with Joshua but even she couldn't ignore a fine guy like Lucas! But it was very unfortunate for all the women out there that Lucas was gay, and he made sure to mention that on multiple occasions just to be clear.
But to his taste, he had never been in a relationship with anyone, at least that Ana knew of. In fact, nobody knew much about his love life or anything about him as Lucas was so less on sharing and so much more on listening.
He was only the centre of attraction of the entire museum and even tourists came there to ogle at him. His cute round face, innocent smile, big brown eyes and ruffled blonde hair could never be missed by anyone even from a faraway distance. Not just his features, his personality was only a feather in the cap as he was extremely sweet, kind and nice to everyone unlike his boss.
Ana wondered many times how these two could even work together and weirdly Lucas had never once scolded or spoken bad about Oliver even behind his back to anyone. How someone could work with the world's biggest jerk and understand their personality, treat them with kindness, Ana would never understand.
"I'm doing great…. Almost as good as new, Lucas. How are you? And..... how's the mood today?", Ana asked the last question almost in a whisper.
It wasn't like Oliver to have mood swings as he was always in a rotten mood. But it did sometimes oscillate between bad, worse and worst moods. So, before going into the lion's den, Ana wanted to be sure. Because honestly after everything she had been through in the past couple of weeks, she didn't want to deal with him the first thing in the morning.
"Weirdly! He's in a good mood today.… but you don't need to worry about anything…. Just take things slow.", Lucas said with a small tap on her shoulder.
"You know that doesn't calm me one bit, right?", she smirked at him.
"Ana… come on.. You are just back to office. So, it's okay to cool off a bit. Try to forget everything and get back up.. you know", he told her reassuringly with a smile.
Although Lucas's pretty face and kind words calmed her jittery nerves, she wasn't a total fan of the fact that everyone in office knew her breakup. It was the most embarrassing thing that had ever happened to her after that time she peed on herself at a friend's birthday party, panicking at a clown entry during her childhood. This was no less than that!
It was Joshua's birthday and Ana had planned this whole romantic surprise for him in the planetarium, which was part of their museum. With the help of some colleagues and without the knowledge of her boss, she somehow pulled off the stunt of proposing to Joshua with all the stars lined up to form the sentence "Will you marry me?".
But bad luck for Ana that as soon as he saw that, he jumped up not in joy but in panic and brutally rejected her proposal. She was very confused because it was the obvious next step in their relationship. She got so sick of waiting for him to ask her and she figured that maybe he was just shy, so she took the onus on herself to propose to him. But she didn't see it, even in her dreams that he would be so appalled by it.
He seemed off a few days even before his birthday, and Ana convinced herself that he might be facing some issues in his office and it wasn't anything to do with their relationship, but boy! she couldn't be more wrong! When Joshua came to her office on his birthday, it almost seemed like he came in only to meet her and convey the bad news that he wanted a break up and Ana only helped by handing him the opportunity on a golden platter.
And the worst part was that he broke up with her right in front of all her colleagues, who were hiding away from the couple for bringing out the cake and champagne after he said Yes. Oh my god! Could things go any worse than that? Ana was not only embarrassed but she was also extremely ashamed to face everyone after that. She went back home crying and never came back till today.
After Lucas's consoling words, it made her just relive the whole shit show and she was regretting it very much that Lucas was part of the crew which helped her setup the whole thing.
"Okay.. fine… But, please don't treat me any differently or be concerned….. I absolutely hate it. I don't want to wallow in self-pity anymore and want to really forget everything and move on. So, let's do that, okay?, she said calmly to Lucas when his phone chimed with a message.
"Sure, Ana. Whatever you need…. Excuse me for a sec…..", he said and looked at his phone. "Okay.. Gotto go… It's the boss…", he smiled at her warmly and made a beeline to Oliver's cabin.
Ana went to her cubicle and sat down with a sigh. She fired up her computed and hosted her email inbox to check what was new.
She told herself that maybe all this could be a good thing and she could finally put everything about Joshua out of her mind by concentrating on work.
As a curator of the museum, she was in charge of cataloguing the documents, artifacts and other specimens making sure everything is fine, organizing exhibits for artists to showcase their talents or for fundraisers to raise money for a cause and much more.
Ana really loved her work. Although it was a bit overwhelming in the beginning because of Oliver, she came to really liking the place.
She considered the museum to be a therapeutic place. She loved taking care of the invaluable, million year old artifacts and all other art pieces which the artists and creators put their heart and soul to bring it into existence.
Sometimes she would just stand in front of a painting, completely mesmerised by the smooth brush strokes, vivid colours and the beautiful message it was trying to convey, that she would forget the whole world around her. Most of their exhibits were a huge success and although she hated to admit it, people came there primarily to salivate on Oliver and Lucas and rarely to appreciate the wonderful display of arts. But she wanted to believe in the latter.
Ana was going through all her emails when Katherine came to her desk and said, "Let's go….!"
She just grabbed a notepad and pen and tagged alongside her friend to the delivery room.
"Feels good to be back….", she admitted to Katherine who was ironing out the purple dress she was wearing and adjusting her smooth brunette hair.
Katherine was always a better dresser than Ana and she had not failed to point that out to Ana on multiple occasions. Today, she was wearing a purple full hand dress with a beautiful pink scarf across her neck. Her burgundy coloured hair was just flowing across her chest like a smooth waterfall but Ana, on the other hand rarely had the time or energy to make herself feel pretty.
"Good to have you back, babe!", she said cheerfully, linking her arms with Ana and both of them were walking towards the delivery room.
