Kaito and Elara stepped into the cottage, their eyes adjusting to the dim light. The interior was cluttered and chaotic, filled with shelves overflowing with jars, books, and strange artifacts. The air was thick with the scent of herbs, incense, and something faintly metallic that made Kaito's stomach churn.
Old Maggie gestured towards a rickety table in the center of the room. "Sit, sit," she croaked, her voice like dry leaves rustling in the wind. "We have much to discuss."
Kaito and Elara cautiously took a seat, their eyes darting around the room, taking in the bizarre collection of objects.
A stuffed raven perched on a bookshelf, its beady eyes seeming to follow their every move. A jar filled with what looked like pickled eyeballs sat on a shelf next to a stack of dusty tomes.
Kaito couldn't help but wonder if he had stumbled into the lair of a madwoman.
Old Maggie chuckled, as if reading his thoughts. "Don't mind the decor," she said, her eyes twinkling. "A witch needs her tools, you know."
Kaito and Elara exchanged a nervous glance. They had come seeking answers, but they weren't sure what to make of this eccentric old woman.
"We need your help," Kaito said, deciding to get straight to the point. "We need to know about the secrets of this village, about the Devil's Tower, and about the curse."
Old Maggie's smile faded, her eyes turning serious. "The curse is real, young man," she said, her voice grave. "And it is more dangerous than you can imagine."
"But how do we break it?" Elara asked, her voice filled with urgency.
Old Maggie leaned forward, her gaze intense. "There is a way," she said, "but it will not be easy. You must complete a task, a trial that will test your courage and your resolve."
"What kind of task?" Kaito asked, his heart pounding with anticipation.
"You must save something precious," Old Maggie said, her voice cryptic. "Something that has been lost."
Kaito frowned. "But what is it? And how do we find it?"
Before Old Maggie could answer, a crash echoed from outside, followed by a chilling scream. Kaito and Elara jumped to their feet, their eyes wide with alarm.
The door burst open, and a figure stumbled into the room, his body bloodied and bruised. It was the red-haired man from the village, his eyes wild with rage. But what shocked Kaito most was what he held in his hand: Luna's severed head, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.
"Luna!" Kaito gasped, his blood turning to ice.
The red-haired man grinned, a cruel and predatory expression. "You're too late," he snarled. "She's just the first. You're next."
He lunged towards them, his hand reaching for Elara's throat. Kaito reacted instinctively, shoving Elara aside and grabbing a nearby jar. He hurled it at the red-haired man, the jar shattering against his head.
The man roared in pain, stumbling back. Elara seized the opportunity, her dagger flashing in the dim light. She lunged forward, her blade finding its mark.
The man screamed, his body convulsing. He collapsed to the ground, his lifeblood pooling around him.
Kaito and Elara stood panting, their bodies trembling with adrenaline. They had survived, but at a terrible cost. Luna was dead, her life brutally extinguished.
Old Maggie knelt beside Luna's body, her eyes filled with grief. She looked up at Kaito, her voice weak. "Save her," she whispered.
Then, she slumped forward, her life fading away.
Kaito felt a surge of despair. He had failed. He had failed to protect Luna, he had failed to save Old Maggie, and he had failed to break the curse.
He looked at Elara, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and determination. He knew they couldn't stay here. They had to escape, to regroup.
But as they turned to flee, the red-haired man's body began to glow, a sinister energy emanating from his wounds. The cottage shook, the walls cracking and crumbling around them.
Kaito felt a searing pain in his chest, his vision blurring. He looked down to see a blade protruding from his chest, the red-haired man's dagger, somehow returned to his hand even in death.
"This... isn't..." Kaito gasped, his voice failing him.
Then, darkness swallowed him whole.
