Kaito woke with a gasp, his heart pounding in his chest. The dream clung to him like cobwebs, the sensation of soft arms wrapping around him, a girl's voice whispering "I love you" with chilling tenderness still echoing in his ears. The image of the devilish girl with her cryptic message burned into his mind. "Bible, Gospel, Aethelhum." What did it mean? Was it a clue, a warning, or just a figment of his loop-addled imagination?
He remembered the feeling of Hope appearing before him, silent and small, a string extending from her tiny hand towards his. He had felt a tug, a connection forming, and then those strange words materialized in the air before him:
"Checkpoint save."
"Resurrection point save."
What did it mean? Is this room the new save point? Is his fate now intertwined with Hope?
He sat up, pushing the lingering remnants of the dream aside. He had to focus on the present, on the reality of his situation. He was in a foreign world, in a Duke's castle, with a young girl to protect and a curse to break.
A knock on the door startled him.
"Enter," he called out, his voice still rough with sleep.
The door opened, and Sebastian, the imposing butler, stood in the doorway. "Good morning, Master Kaito," he said, his voice smooth and polite. "Duke Darius requests your presence in his study. He wishes to speak with you."
Kaito nodded, his stomach churning with a mix of anticipation and apprehension.
He had a feeling this meeting would be crucial, a turning point in his journey.
"And what about Hope?" Kaito asked, glancing towards the sleeping girl.
"Mary will show her around the castle and gardens," Sebastian assured him. "She will be well cared for."
Kaito hesitated for a moment, his protective instincts warring with his curiosity. He had to trust Elara and her people. He had to believe they were safe here.
"Alright," he said, rising to his feet. "Lead the way."
As they walked through the castle corridors, Kaito couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The castle was a labyrinth of grand halls, ornate chambers, and hidden passages. He wondered how many secrets these walls held, how many stories they could tell.
"The Duke is a renowned swordsman," Sebastian said, as if reading his thoughts. "He is known throughout the kingdom for his skill and prowess in battle."
Kaito's eyes widened. A swordsman? Maybe this was his chance to learn how to fight, to protect himself and Hope, to become the hero the prophecy foretold.
They reached the Duke's study, a grand chamber filled with bookshelves and maps. Duke Darius, a tall, imposing man with a stern expression, sat behind a massive oak desk, his fingers steepled in thought. Beside him stood Commander Gavril, his armor gleaming in the sunlight streaming through the window.
"Kaito," Duke Darius said, his voice deep and resonant. "Welcome to Aloria. I trust you are recovering well?"
"Thank you, your Grace," Kaito replied, bowing respectfully. "I am feeling much better."
The Duke nodded. "I have many questions for you," he said, his eyes fixed on Kaito. "About the attack on Aethelhum, about the orcs in the forest, about you and the young girl."
Kaito took a deep breath, his mind racing. He had to be careful, had to choose his words wisely. He couldn't reveal the truth about the loop, but he couldn't lie outright either.
He recounted the events of the past few days, focusing on the attack and his escape with Hope. He omitted any mention of the resets or his own impossible knowledge.
Duke Darius listened intently, his expression unreadable. When Kaito finished, he leaned back in his chair, his fingers drumming on the desk.
"I see," he said, his voice thoughtful. "You have been through a great ordeal, young man. And you have shown remarkable courage and resilience."
Kaito bowed his head, unsure how to respond.
"I have a proposition for you," Duke Darius continued. "I believe you have the potential to become a valuable asset to Aloria, to Eldoria."
Kaito's heart leaped with hope. He looked up at the Duke, his eyes pleading. "Your Grace," he said, his voice earnest. "I beg you, teach me how to fight. I want to protect Hope, I want to protect this land, I want to be strong enough to face any danger."
Duke Darius regarded him for a moment, his expression unreadable. "I cannot personally train you, Kaito," he said, his voice firm but not unkind. "My duties as Duke prevent me from devoting the necessary time."
Kaito's heart sank, but the Duke continued, "However, I can grant you access to the barracks and the training grounds. You may train with my soldiers, learn from their experience, and prove your worth. Earn your place among them, and you will have the opportunity to become a true warrior."
Kaito's spirits soared. It wasn't exactly what he had hoped for, but it was a chance, a starting point. He knelt before the Duke, his voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you, your Grace. I will not disappoint you."
Commander Gavril snorted, his eyes filled with skepticism. "I see nothing special about this boy," he said, his voice gruff. "He's just a commoner, with no skills or training."
The Duke raised a hand, silencing the commander. "He has courage, Gavril," he said, his voice firm. "And that is a rare and valuable quality."
He turned back to Kaito. "You are free to train with my soldiers," he said. "The training grounds are yours to use freely. Prove yourself worthy, and you will earn your place among us."
Kaito bowed his head again, his determination burning bright. He would not disappoint the Duke. He would train hard, he would learn everything he could, and he would become the warrior this world needed.
After the meeting, Sebastian escorted Kaito on a tour of the castle, showing him the various chambers, gardens, and training grounds. Kaito's curiosity led him to ask about the castle library, hoping to learn more about this world, its history, and its magic.
"The library is vast, Kaito," Sebastian said, "but access to the upper floors is restricted to those the Duke trusts implicitly. However, you are welcome to peruse the first floor, where you will find a wealth of knowledge about our world."
Kaito entered the library, his eyes widening in awe at the sight of countless bookshelves stretching towards the high vaulted ceiling. Even with only the first floor accessible, he had a feeling he would be spending a lot of time here, searching for answers, for clues, for a way to break the curse and fulfill his destiny.
