The afternoon was peaceful too peaceful. The kind of quiet that made Yue restless.
She had fallen into an easy rhythm at Shen Xu's teahouse, cooking, cleaning, and teasing him whenever she could. But something about today felt off.
Maybe it was the way the wind had shifted, carrying an unfamiliar scent. Or maybe it was the faint prickle at the back of her neck, the kind she had learned long ago never to ignore.
She set down the broom she had been half-heartedly using and stretched. "I'm going out for a bit."
Shen Xu didn't even look up from the tea leaves he was sorting. "Don't get into trouble."
She smirked. "Who, me?"
She stepped outside, taking in the quiet village. Everything seemed normal. Merchants chatting, villagers going about their business. Yet, as she strolled past the market stalls, her sharp eyes caught something unusual a group of men lingering near the entrance of the village.
They weren't locals. Their clothes were travel-worn, dust clinging to their boots, and the way they scanned the area wasn't the gaze of simple travelers.
They were looking for someone.
Yue's playful smirk faded as she slipped into a nearby alley, keeping them in sight without drawing attention.
Then she saw it one of the men pulled out a crude sketch from his sleeve. Even from a distance, she recognized the face drawn on the parchment.
Shen Xu.
Her heart kicked against her ribs.
For a moment, she just stood there, mind racing. Who were these people? Why were they looking for him? She had suspected from the start that there was more to him than he let on, but she hadn't expected trouble to come knocking so soon.
She exhaled slowly, slipping back through the alley toward the teahouse. She could run. She should run. Whatever Shen Xu had done to attract this attention wasn't her problem.
But then she thought about the way he sipped his tea with infuriating calm. The way he moved like a man who had nothing to fear. The way he never spoke about his past.
And she realized something.
Shen Xu already knew.
By the time she reached the teahouse, she found him exactly where she left him, still seated at the table, still calm, still sorting through tea leaves as if nothing in the world could bother him.
She shut the door behind her. "You've got visitors."
He glanced up. "Oh?"
Yue crossed her arms, watching him carefully. "A group of men at the village gate. They've got a drawing of you."
For a long moment, Shen Xu said nothing. Then, with a quiet sigh, he set his tea aside and stood.
"Do you want to run?" she asked, though she already knew the answer.
Shen Xu gave her a look one that sent a shiver down her spine. Calm, steady, but beneath it, something dangerous.
"Why would I run?" he said simply.
Yue exhaled, shaking her head. "Fine. Do what you want. But if you're going to start killing people, at least wait until I finish making dinner."
He smirked. Just barely. "Noted."
