A Bold Decision

Jian Yiling forced herself to shove the strange boy's warning to the back of her mind. Whatever the meaning of his words, her priority was her children. With the hundred-year-old ginseng and the rare herbs she'd collected, she was confident that she could trade for enough money to start the next phase of her plan—a stable income.

The day after her trip to the mountains, she packed her basket and headed toward the village center, her mind set on speaking with the village chief about buying a plot of land. Farming would not yield instant riches, but it would mean steady food on the table and a chance for her family to grow strong.

Her children watched her from the doorway, their eyes curious but quiet.

"Mama will be back soon," Yiling reassured them with a gentle smile, giving each a kiss on the forehead. "Stay indoors and play nicely, hm? Zhi, watch over your sister."

Zhi nodded solemnly, puffing up his chest as if his four years of age made him an old man. Yun'er clung to Yiling's skirt for a moment before letting go, her big, round eyes silently begging her to hurry back.
