Kai's mind shattered.
He felt himself falling, but there was no gravity. No up, no down—just an endless descent into something vast and unknowable. He wasn't even sure if he existed in this space. His thoughts, his memories, his very sense of self—all of it was unraveling.
"Who was playing you before you became real?"
That question still echoed in his mind, a cruel whisper that refused to fade.
Was he truly real?
Was he Kai Renji, the top-ranked player, the strategist, the survivor?
Or was he something else—something created, shaped by forces beyond his understanding?
A deep, resounding boom echoed through the void, pulling him back to awareness. Light exploded around him, colors bleeding into shapes, into form. His body materialized, his senses returning all at once—
And he was awake.
Kai gasped, his body arching as he shot up from the cold stone floor. His hands trembled. His heart pounded like a war drum. For a moment, he expected to see the void again—to see himself standing there, watching, waiting.
But instead, he was in a room. A massive, circular chamber made of smooth black stone. The air smelled of metal and something ancient, something untouched by time. Strange glowing symbols lined the walls, pulsing in a slow, rhythmic pattern.
Lena was there. So was Void. Both were staring at him, their expressions unreadable.
"You're back," Lena said quietly.
Kai exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Back?" His voice was hoarse. "Where did I go?"
Void narrowed his eyes. "You stopped moving. Your body was here, but your mind… it was somewhere else."
Kai swallowed. He could still feel the echo of that other self, lurking in the edges of his thoughts. A presence that was him, but not him.
"I saw something," he murmured. "No… I spoke to something."
Lena knelt beside him, her voice softer now. "What did it say?"
Kai hesitated. He wasn't sure how to explain it without sounding insane.
"It asked me if I was real," he finally said. "And then it asked me… who was playing me before I became real?"
Silence.
Lena paled. Void's expression darkened.
Kai looked at them, his pulse still racing. "You've both been hiding something from me, haven't you?"
Lena bit her lip. "It's not—"
"Don't lie to me," Kai snapped, his voice sharper than he intended. He wasn't in the mood for half-truths anymore.
Lena sighed, running a hand through her hair. "It's not that we were hiding it. It's just…" She trailed off, searching for the right words. "I don't think either of us wanted to believe it."
Kai clenched his fists. "Believe what?"
Void spoke this time, his voice steady. "That you're different, Kai. That the reason you understand this world so well isn't just because you were a top player. It's because…"
He paused.
Kai's stomach twisted. "Because what?"
Lena exhaled sharply. "Because I didn't create you."
Kai froze.
His thoughts screeched to a halt.
He turned to her, his voice dangerously calm. "What did you just say?"
Lena's hands clenched into fists. "I wrote the game, Kai. I built the world, the mechanics, the lore. But you… you weren't part of the original design."
The floor felt like it was collapsing beneath him.
Kai struggled to process her words. "That's impossible. I was the main player character. The protagonist. I—"
"Yes, the player character," Lena interrupted. "Not you. I designed an avatar, a customizable entity that players controlled. But you, Kai Renji? The one sitting in front of me? You weren't supposed to exist."
Kai's pulse roared in his ears.
Everything—the strategy, the instinct, the way he adapted so easily to this world—it wasn't just skill. It wasn't just knowledge.
It was something else.
Something unnatural.
"You weren't created by me," Lena said, her voice barely above a whisper. "So the question is… who did?"
The room was silent.
And then, the walls shifted.
The glowing symbols flickered. The air grew heavy, vibrating with an unseen force.
A new voice echoed through the chamber.
Deep. Cold. Amused.
"Finally, you ask the right question."
Kai's blood turned to ice.
The chamber shook. The symbols on the walls twisted, rearranging into something new—something sentient.
And then, in the center of the room, a figure began to form.
Shadows swirled together, coalescing into a tall, faceless being clad in flowing black robes. Its presence was suffocating, ancient, vast beyond comprehension.
Lena gasped. Void tensed.
Kai stood, his entire body locked in place.
The entity chuckled.
"You have walked the path of the game, Kai Renji."
It raised a hand. The air cracked around it.
"Now, it is time for you to learn the truth of the Player."
And with those words, reality shattered.
