For the rest of the way, Adam carried the woman. To lessen the damage, he kept a slow pace but still faster than before.

The sun was completely gone, and they still hadn't arrived. Lamps lit up the snake trail, highlighting the curved path they had overcome.

"We're almost there."

Adam couldn't see the entrance yet, but he was feeling the people inside. He didn't know how many, but it was a lot, and not far from where he was.

In his arms, the woman had fallen asleep after crying for a solid hour. Looking down at her, Adam remembered his grandmother. It was the scariest moment of his life—not even when Marduk was after him had he felt so afraid as when he held Maria's heart in his hand.

Climbing in the dark, he wondered how she was. Probably desperately looking for her daughter, his mother.

About to be dragged into a depression hole, the boy took a step that revealed a light.
