Chapter 4: Rainy Afternoon & Hidden Truths

The sky wept a symphony of grey, mirroring the melancholic mood that had settled over Shiori. Rain lashed against the shop windows, blurring the vibrant colors of the marigolds into a watercolor wash. She was arranging a bouquet of lilies, their delicate fragrance a stark contrast to the storm raging outside, when the bell above the door tinkled.

Rei stood framed in the doorway, her hair plastered to her forehead, her usual confident air replaced by a hesitant vulnerability. She looked like a wilted rose, her usual vibrancy dimmed by the downpour.

"Mind if I come in?" Rei asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Shiori shook her head, a warmth spreading through her chest despite the chill in the air. "Of course not," she said, stepping aside to let Rei in.

Rei slipped inside, shaking the rain from her coat. She looked around the shop, her gaze lingering on the marigolds, a faint smile gracing her lips.

"They're beautiful," she murmured, her voice soft. "Just like the ones my grandmother used to grow."

Shiori nodded, her heart aching with a sudden empathy for the woman. There was a sadness in Rei's eyes, a hidden story waiting to be told.

They stood in silence for a moment, the only sound the rhythmic drumming of the rain against the windowpanes. Shiori offered Rei a cup of hot tea, the steam swirling around them like a comforting embrace.

Rei accepted gratefully, her fingers brushing Shiori's as she took the cup. Their eyes met, and Shiori felt a jolt of electricity shoot through her.

"Thank you," Rei whispered, her gaze intense. "I needed this."

She took a sip of the tea, her eyes closing in contentment.

"I'm running away," Rei confessed, her voice barely audible.

Shiori's breath caught in her throat.

"From what?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Rei looked up, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and longing.

"From myself," she whispered, her voice trembling.
