Chapter 8: An Unexpected Touch

The salty air whipped Shiori's hair as she rearranged a basket of lilies, preparing for the annual coastal town festival. The shop bustled with activity, townspeople buzzing in and out, picking out bouquets for loved ones. Rei, shying away from the crowds, was helping Shiori string marigold garlands to adorn the shop's window displays.

Sunlight streamed in through the open front door, casting a warm glow on Shiori as she bent over a vase, arranging a vibrant display of sunflowers. A sudden light touch against her arm startled her, causing her to jump back.

Rei stood behind her, her face flushed, a marigold garland tangled in her hair, a sheepish grin playing on her lips.

"Sorry," Rei murmured, her fingertips brushing against Shiori's skin again in an apologetic gesture. "Didn't mean to startle you."

The unexpected touch, light and fleeting, sent a shiver down Shiori's spine. It wasn't the first time Rei had accidentally brushed against her – she'd become increasingly mindful of her proximity, leaning in a little closer when measuring ribbons, their fingers often intertwining as they worked together.

"It's alright," Shiori stammered, her cheeks warming under Rei's gaze, her heart beating a little faster than usual.

They fell silent, a comfortable sort of awkwardness settling between them. Shiori couldn't quite tear her eyes away from Rei's flushed cheeks, the way her hair cascaded down her shoulders, the delicate curve of her neck.

Rei cleared her throat, looking down at the marigold garland in her hand. "Some of these are wilting," she mumbled, her voice a hushed whisper.

"Let me take care of those," Shiori offered, reaching out to take the garland. Their hands clasped for a brief moment, a spark of electricity jumping between them. Rei's touch was warm, sending a quick tremor through Shiori's veins.

"Almost finished," Shiori murmured, her gaze lingering on Rei's hand for a moment too long.

The air felt thicker, charged with unspoken tension. For a moment, the bustling shop faded into the background, the world shrinking until it was just them, their breaths mingling in the warm air.

Before either of them could speak, a customer entered the shop, disrupting the fragile connection. Shiori looked away, aware of the sudden heat rising in her cheeks. Rei followed her gaze, a knowing smile playing on her lips.
