Seraphina returned quickly.
She was soaked through, her hair plastered to her face, looking utterly disheveled.
She burst through the door, our eyes meeting in the living room.
I held the cake, looking up at her.
"What took you so long..."
The neon lights from outside filtered through the rain-streaked windows, as Seraphina's brow gradually furrowed.
She took a deep breath, strode over quickly, and held me tightly in her arms.
"I'm sorry, Alec."
"It won't happen again."
I asked Seraphina to make a wish and blow out the candles.
I told her this was the first birthday I'd spent with her.
The guilt in her eyes was almost palpable.
While she was cutting the cake, I snuck a glance at my phone.
Gunner had sent a barrage of messages. The moment he called, I quickly muted it and shoved the phone into the couch cushions.
I looked up, meeting Seraphina's gaze.
Her eyes were full of tenderness. "Alec."
"We'll spend many, many more birthdays together from now on."
