The atmosphere in the forest clearing was thick with tension. Kaito, kunai in hand, prepared for what he knew would be a crucial battle. In front of him, the ROOT operative stood silently, watching him with a cold gaze. There was no doubt in his stance, only a clear objective: to defeat Kaito and, if necessary, force him to hand over the blueprints and join the secret organization.
The masked man took a step forward, his posture defensive, yet his intentions were clear. His face, hidden behind a black mask, betrayed no emotions, but Kaito could feel the real threat before him. The sense of danger was almost tangible.
"You will do as you're told," the masked man said, his deep voice echoing through the trees. "I'll give you one chance, Kaito. Hand over the blueprints and join ROOT. If you make the right choice, your family will remain unharmed."
Kaito remained silent, his eyes locked onto his opponent's. He couldn't allow anyone to use his family as bargaining chips. He knew he had no choice: he had to fight, and he had to win. Not just for his family, but for the future of the village and the technology he had begun developing to improve the lives of the villagers.
In the blink of an eye, the masked man lunged at him with surprising speed, but Kaito had already anticipated the move. He swiftly sidestepped, sliding across the ground while throwing a kunai at his opponent. The masked man dodged it with ease, but Kaito hadn't done it without reason.
A second later, Kaito raised his hand and, with a precise motion, whispered:
—Suiton: Suishōha.
Water began to flow from his hands, transforming into a powerful torrent that crashed into the masked man, pushing him back. Kaito's mastery of the Water Element was formidable, and he had trained to use it strategically in combat. The masked man barely had time to shield himself, but the force of the water forced him several steps back.
"Impressive," the masked man admitted, now aware that Kaito would not be easily defeated. "But you haven't won yet."
The masked man quickly regrouped, leaping toward Kaito with inhuman speed. The young man from Amegakure was ready. With a swift motion, Kaito summoned another water technique, this time the Snake's Maw.
—Suiton: Ja no Kuchi.
A giant water serpent emerged from the ground, opening its massive jaws and striking at the masked man with brutal force. The masked operative reacted quickly, leaping aside to avoid being devoured by the water beast. But despite his agility, the impact of the attack had left him momentarily dazed.
Kaito didn't stop there. With the situation momentarily under control, he took advantage of the opening to unleash another technique:
—Suiton: Suiben.
A whip of water shot from his hands, lashing toward the masked man. The whip coiled around the enemy's leg, trapping him for a brief moment. Kaito seized the instant to close the distance and strike, but the masked man, in a burst of energy, released a shockwave of chakra that shattered the whip and sent Kaito tumbling backward.
"That was impressive," the masked man commented, rising and shaking his head. "But what I truly want is your cooperation, Kaito. Join ROOT, and your life will continue with the success you've achieved so far. If you refuse, then..."
Kaito was no longer listening. The sound of his words faded into the air. There was something in the masked man's tone that made him decide without hesitation. He could not trust someone who threatened his life and that of his loved ones. Nor could he allow anyone to use the technology he had created for dark purposes. His response was clear:
"I will not join ROOT. And I won't hand over anything."
With fierce speed, Kaito pressed his hands to the ground, and as water swirled around his fingers, his voice echoed like a sentence.
—Suiton: Goshokuzame.
Five water sharks erupted from the ground, rapidly surrounding the masked man and striking with blinding speed. Each shark, formed of pure chakra and condensed water, carried the force of a deadly attack. The creatures' razor-sharp teeth clashed against his opponent with unstoppable ferocity. The masked man, unable to defend against all the attacks at once, tried to dodge, but he couldn't avoid being torn into by the sharks. Blood began to stain the ground, and although he managed to escape from some of the sharks, the damage was severe.
Kaito, exhausted from expending so much chakra, dropped to his knees, his breathing ragged. Fatigue washed over him, and though his body trembled from exertion, he could not afford to let his guard down. The masked man, now drenched in blood and covered in deep wounds from the sharks' bites, struggled to stay on his feet.
The air was heavy with the tension of battle. Kaito, still gasping, slowly stood up. He looked at his enemy, who no longer seemed as determined as before. His body was marked with wounds, and the damage from the water sharks appeared to be irreversible.
"This... this isn't over," the masked man murmured, as he collapsed to the ground, completely defeated. Darkness consumed him as Kaito's chakra finally drained away.
Kaito, still struggling, allowed himself a brief moment of rest. He looked around, his body numb but feeling that he had managed to protect what mattered most. The fight wasn't over, but at that moment, he had taken a decisive step toward victory.
And though the shadows of danger still loomed, Kaito knew he could not give up. He had won this battle, but the war was far from over.
