Chapter 15: The Exploration of the Archipelago

With the plans set, Edmund ordered three expeditions to explore the islands surrounding Claw Island. Small, fast ships were prepared, each crewed by experienced sailors, scouts, cartographers, and traders. The objective was to map new lands, identify natural resources, establish potential outposts, and assess threats or strategic opportunities.

The first expedition, led by Voss, set sail westward, where rumors suggested that larger islands had lush vegetation and freshwater sources. The second, commanded by Kieza, sailed south in search of islands inhabited by potential allies or enemies. Edmund himself accompanied the third expedition eastward, where ancient tales spoke of unknown lands and hidden dangers.

The winds were favorable, and soon the explorers encountered islands of all kinds—some covered in dense tropical forests, with crystal-clear rivers and abundant wildlife; others barren and rocky, but with caves hinting at the presence of precious minerals. Some islands were inhabited by small local tribes, living off fishing and foraging, while others appeared abandoned for centuries, with ruins overtaken by vegetation—temples and forgotten cities being reclaimed by nature.

On the western island, Voss discovered vast deposits of iron and copper, essential for the production of weapons and armor. Additionally, he found fertile lands suitable for agriculture and livestock, which could ensure the colony's self-sufficiency. During the exploration, his crew encountered wild animals, including large felines and venomous serpents, forcing them to remain constantly on guard.

To the south, Kieza and her crew found a community of exiles and shipwreck survivors living in an improvised coastal village. Some were willing to trade and perhaps even join the colony, while others remained cautious and hostile. During their stay, Kieza also found evidence of recent pirate activity—abandoned camps and shipwreck debris scattered along the coast.

Edmund's expedition to the east proved to be the most dangerous. During the night, as they navigated unknown waters, they were attacked by massive sea creatures, forcing the crew into a desperate struggle to keep the ship intact. At dawn, they spotted a mysterious island with ancient ruins—stone structures suggesting an advanced civilization that once inhabited the region. Deep within the island, they discovered vast caves and enigmatic inscriptions, possibly clues to a secret yet to be uncovered.

After weeks of exploration, the three expeditions returned to Claw Island with detailed maps, records of flora and fauna, and valuable information about the inhabitants and resources. The discoveries opened new possibilities for expansion and trade but also introduced new challenges. Edmund and his advisors now had to decide the best way to utilize the newly discovered resources and deal with the hidden dangers of the archipelago, carefully planning the next steps for their growing colony.
