Harrington suddenly raised his voice.
Across the screen, Harrington and I locked eyes, and his face instantly turned pale.
I saw the terror and panic in his eyes.
The next second, the screen went black, and my phone indicated no signal.
Harrington had unplugged the power.
Before Harrington could return, I received a call from Melody.
Her voice on the phone was particularly smug.
"Brent, you secretly reconnected the power to the surveillance room, didn't you? You're really good at holding it in. You saw Harrington and me lying on your bed, and you still didn't make a scene?"
"Have you ever seen him this wild before? After all, you're like a dead fish in bed. You can't give Harrington any passion. He's been addicted to my body for a long time."
"Can you really tolerate Harrington continuing to see me after you're married? Oh, I forgot to tell you, not just in bed, but in the kitchen, bathroom, couch - we've made love in every corner of your house."Melody hung up the phone, and not long after, Harrington rushed back.
"Brent, there's not much good food around here. How about I cook for you myself when we get home tonight?"
"By the way, how did the surveillance cameras at home suddenly start working again?"
He brought it up casually, but his eyes were fixed intently on my expression.
I met his gaze, my face completely open.
"The power's back on? I didn't know about that. Maybe the plug was accidentally put in the wrong socket before."
A flicker of hesitation passed through his eyes.
"Is that so? Have you checked the surveillance footage recently?"
"I deleted the surveillance app a while ago."
I took my phone out of my pocket and showed him the home screen.
The moment he discovered the cameras, I immediately copied the videos to cloud storage and then uninstalled the app.
He saw only a handful of commonly used apps on my phone screen.
Harrington was about to breathe a sigh of relief.
I suddenly asked,
"What's wrong? Did the cameras catch something?"
Harrington's pupils trembled, his breathing became rapid, and he blurted out,
"No, it's impossible they caught anything."
"What?""Not really. What I meant was I didn't capture anything on camera. It's just the two of us at home, so we don't need surveillance. I put the camera away."
I nodded.
"We certainly don't need it anymore."
After all, I already knew the truth. I had saved the evidence of his affair.
Hearing my words, Harrington felt a wave of unease wash over him.
But upon seeing the black and white portrait displayed at the memorial, that unease immediately dissipated. He attributed my unusual behavior to grief over losing my parents.
He pulled me into his arms to comfort me.
"Brent, you still have me. Once we're married, I'll be your family."
Afterwards, Harrington drove me back, saying he'd come to keep vigil that night.
Lying in bed, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Suddenly I remembered Mom saying before she passed that she wanted to eat some milk cake.
I immediately got up, got dressed, and went to the nearby mall.
Just as I bought the cake and exited the store, I spotted Harrington across the way in a baby store, accompanying Melody as she shopped for baby items.
I quietly followed them.
The two of them were carefully selecting baby clothes.
"Babe, if it's a girl we'll call her Cherry, if it's a boy we'll call him Timmy."Harrington reached out and gently tapped Melody's nose, his voice filled with affection.
"Whether it's a girl or a boy, I'll love them just the same."
My hand, still holding the cake, clenched into a fist.
