×××××Flashback of that fateful night×××××
When Kate knocked off from work, it was raining heavily outside. Feeling frustrated with how Xavier refused to replace his fiancée, Riley with a mid-list model that she'd suggested, Kate decided to call Josh over to her apartment. To which Josh agreed.
Kate and Josh were cuddling on the couch in the living room, watching a movie when someone knocked at the door. Josh went to get the door. Kate was surprised to see Derrick and his entourage of bodyguards making their way in her home. She stood up from the couch. Josh was quick to stand by her side, not trusting the shady men who had just made their entrance into his girlfriend's apartment.
"You have no reason coming here." Kate told Derrick who was making himself comfortable, taking a seat on the couch.
Kate had previously made a deal with Derrick. That he should link her up with a suitable hit-and-run driver for her mastermind operation of dealing with Riley, and in return, Kate would do anything Derrick asked of her. Anything.
"Relax, kiddo. I'm here for your mother." Derrick smirked. He turned to observe Josh who was seated besides Kate. "By the way, who's this young man?"
"The name's Josh and I'm her boyfriend." Josh gave his curt response.
"Cool." Derrick nodded, turning to speak to Kate. "When is she going to be back?"
"I don't know." Kate shrugged.
"No worries. I'll wait for her."
Creak.
Janet hurriedly shut the door the door behind her while short on her breath to abruptly stop in her tracks upon seeing Derrick, the person she was running away from.
Derrick chuckled dryly enjoying seeing Janet startled to see him. "You can run but you can't hide from me, darling."
Janet exhaled, put on a brave front and approached Derrick. "We agreed that you wouldn't approch her anymore." She glared at Derrick.
"I couldn't help it. I need my money."
"I need more time."
Derrick chuckled. He got up from the couch and approched Janet. "I've given you more than enough time to gather my money. But it seems like you've taken me for a fool."
"I'll pay you back. I promise."
"Fine."
Janet's eyes sparkled. "Really?" She couldn't believe her luck. A loanshark like Derrick was showing her mercy.
"On one condition." He stood behind Janet, bending down to whisper in her ear. "Here." He placed his gun in her hand. "Aim for her head and I'll forget about your debt. It'll be like it never existed."
"W-what?!" She exclaimed.
"Just pull the trigger." He raised Janet's arm to help her point the gun at Kate. "I know you want to."
"Mom!" Kate shrieked, teary-eyed, standing up from her seat alongside Josh.
"With her out of the picture, we can finally be together again. Just you and me."
Janet shakily exhaled, placing her finger on the trigger. "That sounds like a plan." She grinned.
"Mom! I'm your daughter!"
"I wish you weren't." Although Kate had heard this statement from Janet a million times, it still hurt.
"Mom!" Kate cried out to Janet trying to reason with her.
Click!
Silence enveloped the living room.
Kate's eyes were tightly closed. 'Is this how I die?' She thought to herself. She waited for the heart-wrenching pain to come.
She waited...
...and waited
But the pain didn't come. When Kate finally opened her eyes again, she saw Janet pressing the trigger countless times, but no bullet would come out.
The realisation came too late for Janet. The gun wasn't loaded. Derrick had tricked her.
Kate's legs felt like jelly, she was so relieved that she fell down to the floor.
"I can't believe how quickly you would kill our daughter."
Kate's heart froze. 'What did he just say?'
Janet shrieked, throwing the gun away. She frustratedly pulled on her braids, pacing around the living room.
Derrick took another gun from his suit pocket and threw it at the floor. The gun slid on the floor, stopping just a few centimeters from Kate who was still seated on the floor.
Janet stopped pacing around. 'I have to get that gun before Kate.' She's thought to herself and quickly made an attempt to snatch the gun from the floor before Kate.
Alas! Janet was too slow. Kate was quick to pick up the gun and...
Boom!
The bullet flew from the gun, hitting the target right in the head.
Satisfied with everything, Derrick instructed his men to clean up the place, making sure that there wouldn't be anything that'd trace this incident back to him.
Josh had no choice but to drag Kate, who was still in shock with what had happened, out of the apartment into the heavy pouring rain, driving them both to his apartment.
Kate's mind was hazy. She was no longer thinking straight. After all, she'd just killed her mother. How was she going to live with this?
However, in hindsight, just as Janet was rushing to grab the gun, Josh couldn't help but also rush to grab the gun. He couldn't possibly allow Janet to shoot the love of his life. Thus, it was actually Josh and Kate together, who rushed to pick up the gun and pulled the trigger. So, it was Josh and Kate who fired the bullet that blew Janet's brains out, killing her on the spot.
