Kai couldn't shake the feeling that the Chronicle had more to reveal. It pulsed faintly at his side, like a heartbeat, a constant reminder of the bond he now shared with it. But the pages remained still, offering no guidance.
"What now?" Lena finally broke the silence, her voice cutting through the oppressive air. "The book's quiet, and we've got this stone. What's next?"
Kai frowned. "It said something about a next trial. I don't know what that means yet, but I'm pretty sure this isn't over."
"Great," Lena muttered, rolling her eyes. "Because that's exactly what I wanted to hear."
Kai stopped walking, turning to face her. "Look, I didn't ask for this either, alright? But if you want to back out, I won't blame you."
Lena's gaze softened, and she sighed. "I'm not backing out. I just… I wish I knew what we were getting into."
Kai nodded, understanding her frustration. He felt it too. Every step forward seemed to plunge them deeper into a world he barely understood, with no clear path to escape.
By the time they reached the outskirts of their makeshift camp, the sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. But something was off. The air crackled with an unnatural energy, and the faint smell of burning lingered in the breeze.
"Stay alert," Kai whispered, his hand instinctively reaching for the Chronicle. Lena nodded, drawing her dagger as they approached the camp.
The sight that greeted them sent a chill down Kai's spine. The camp was in ruins. Tents were torn to shreds, supplies scattered and smoldering. And in the center of the devastation stood a figure cloaked in black, their face obscured by a dark hood.
"So, you're the one who claimed the Chronicle," the figure said, their voice low and gravelly. "I've been waiting for you."
Kai tightened his grip on the book, his heart pounding. "Who are you? What do you want?"
The figure chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down Kai's spine. "Names are irrelevant. What matters is power. And you've stumbled into something far beyond your comprehension."
Lena stepped forward, her dagger glinting in the fading light. "If you're here to fight, you're outnumbered."
The figure tilted their head, as if amused. "Am I?"
Before either of them could react, the ground beneath them trembled, and shadows began to coalesce around the figure. They rose like living beings, forming into grotesque shapes with glowing red eyes and clawed hands.
Kai's stomach dropped. More Echoes.
"You have something I need," the figure said, pointing directly at the Chronicle. "Hand it over, and I'll consider letting you live."
Kai's grip on the book tightened. "Not a chance."
The figure sighed, as though disappointed. "Pity. Then you leave me no choice."
The Echoes lunged, their movements unnaturally fast. Lena reacted first, slashing at the nearest one and dodging its swipe. Kai opened the Chronicle, hoping for guidance, and was rewarded as new text appeared:
"Emergency Protocol Activated: Temporary Skill Unlocked - Arcane Barrage."
Kai barely had time to process the words before a surge of energy coursed through him. His hands glowed with a bright blue light, and instinct took over. He thrust his palms forward, and bolts of arcane energy shot out, striking the Echoes with explosive force.
The tide of the battle shifted, but the figure in black remained still, watching.
Lena fought with precision, her dagger a blur as she dispatched Echo after Echo. "Kai, we need to take out the source!" she shouted, nodding toward the cloaked figure.
Kai hesitated. The figure radiated an aura of power that made his skin crawl. But Lena was right; as long as they stood, the Echoes would keep coming.
"Cover me!" Kai yelled, sprinting toward the figure. The Chronicle pulsed in his hands, and more text appeared:
"Focus your energy. Arcane Barrage can be concentrated into a single, devastating strike."
Kai gritted his teeth, channeling the remaining energy into his palms. The glow intensified, and he felt the power building to a breaking point.
The figure finally moved, raising a hand. Dark tendrils shot toward Kai, but Lena intercepted them, her dagger slicing through the shadows. "Go!" she screamed.
Kai didn't hesitate. He unleashed the energy in a single, blinding beam that struck the figure square in the chest. The impact sent a shockwave through the camp, scattering debris and dissolving the remaining Echoes.
When the light faded, the figure was gone, leaving only a charred mark on the ground.
Kai collapsed to his knees, the Chronicle slipping from his hands. His vision blurred, and the last thing he saw before darkness claimed him was Lena rushing to his side.
Kai woke to the sound of crackling fire and the smell of something cooking. He opened his eyes to find Lena sitting nearby, tending to a small pot over the flames.
"You're awake," she said, glancing at him. "About time."
Kai groaned as he sat up, every muscle in his body protesting. "What happened?"
"You blasted that guy into oblivion," Lena said, stirring the pot. "Then passed out. I dragged you here and patched you up. You're welcome."
Kai managed a weak smile. "Thanks."
Lena's expression grew serious. "That wasn't just some random attack, Kai. Whoever that was, they knew about the Chronicle. And they're not going to stop coming."
Kai nodded, his gaze drifting to the book lying nearby. "I know. But we'll be ready."
The Chronicle pulsed faintly, as though in agreement. The next trial was waiting, and Kai knew their journey was far from over.
