At first, Varaan didn't react. She expected nothing more than him returning from one of his usual adventures, likely with some tale of trouble or a new insignificant discovery. But something felt different this time. Kai wasn't alone.
He had a man draped across his shoulders, a weight that seemed far too heavy for someone so used to the forest. The man's limbs hung limp, his body completely still—unconscious. Varaan's eyes narrowed as she watched them both. She couldn't help but feel a mix of irritation and concern. Kai always seemed to get himself tangled up in something.
As Kai approached, he glanced at her, his usual grin only partly visible under the dust and sweat on his face.
"Got yourself into some trouble, did you?" Varaan called out, her tone sarcastic as she crossed her arms and studied the stranger on his shoulders. "What, did you decide to bring me a surprise guest today?"
Kai gave a half-shrug, his grin widening despite the weight he was carrying. "You could say that. Found him out in the woods—didn't look like he was going to make it much longer on his own. Thought you'd want to see this one."
Varaan didn't move as he drew closer, but her eyes stayed locked on the unconscious man. There was something off about the way he hung limply across Kai's shoulders. The uneasy feeling that had been tugging at her all morning deepened, her instincts screaming that this wasn't just any random person. Kai set the man down gently, his face finally showing a rare, serious expression as he carefully removed him from his shoulders.
"What happened to him?" Varaan asked, her voice low, her arms still crossed. She could feel the tension in the air, a quiet weight that didn't sit well.
Kai sighed, wiping the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand, still looking at the man with a mix of confusion and curiosity. "Not sure, but he's still breathing. Found him just past the clearing. The guy was in bad shape—scratches all over him, looks like he's been through a fight, maybe worse. But what really caught my attention was the strange lock around his neck."
Varaan arched an eyebrow at that. "A lock? That's an odd thing to find in the middle of the woods."
"He's not a regular traveler, that's for sure," Kai replied, stepping back to let Varaan approach. "I thought it was best to bring him back here. We'll figure out what's going on, but he might not be much use for conversation just yet." He glanced down at the unconscious man with a hint of frustration before meeting Varaan's gaze. "You know, it's always you who ends up fixing these things."
Varaan smirked, her voice tinged with a faint edge. "You're lucky you're charming enough to get away with dragging strange men into our hut."
Without waiting for a response, she moved to kneel beside the man, her gaze scanning his form. His clothes were torn, his skin scratched up, and his breath shallow. As she reached down to help him, her fingers brushed against something strange—a mark on his foot through the tear in his shoe sole. It was a tattoo, dark and intricate, like some kind of symbol, strange and foreign. Her fingers traced the edge of it for a moment before her attention shifted to the lock around his neck. It was made of metal, ornate but unrecognizable, and it seemed to pulse with a subtle energy.
"Could've chosen a more comfortable place to collapse," Varaan muttered under her breath. She glanced up at Kai. "You didn't think to ask him what he was running from before carrying him off to our doorstep, did you?"
Kai shrugged, not looking particularly apologetic. "I don't usually get that far with the people I rescue."
Varaan rolled her eyes. "Well, next time, try asking questions before you go playing knight in shining armor."
Despite her sarcasm, her hands were gentle as she helped the unconscious man remove his shoes. As she slid them off, the tattoo on his sole became more pronounced, a swirling symbol that appeared to cover his entire foot. Her eyes flicked up at Kai as she paused for a moment. "This is strange," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kai crouched beside her, his frown deepening as he noticed the tattoo. "What do you think it means?"
"I have no idea," Varaan replied, her focus still on the strange marks. "But I've never seen anything like it before. This isn't something you just find on the average traveler. This man... there's something more to him. Whatever it is, I don't think we're going to get the answers by just waiting for him to wake up."
With careful hands, Varaan moved to check the lock around the man's neck. It wasn't like any standard piece of jewelry. The lock was strange, almost resembling ancient vampire craftsmanship, but with no clear origin. It was inscribed with symbols she didn't recognize. "This lock isn't just a decoration. It's not even meant to be removed by normal means. I've seen enough of these to know it's enchanted. That's no simple object."
Kai's usual carefree demeanor faded as he knelt beside her. "You think he's been cursed or imprisoned?"
"I don't know," Varaan said, pulling gently at the lock, but it didn't budge. "But we won't know until he wakes up. This is far beyond a simple injury or accident."
She placed her hand on the man's chest, checking for signs of injury, but his pulse was steady, and he seemed more exhausted than hurt. The strange lock and tattoo were still the biggest mystery.
"Did you get a look at his face?" Kai asked quietly, as if mulling something over. "I didn't, but there was something... off about him. Like he was waiting for someone."
Varaan glanced over at Kai. "Isn't that what you do with everyone you find in the woods? Carry them back and expect them to tell you their whole life story?"
"Not everyone. Just the interesting ones," he replied with a sly grin, though the concern was still evident in his eyes. "But seriously, this doesn't feel like a random encounter. And I don't think this guy is out here by chance."
Varaan stood up, wiping her hands on her pants, her eyes lingering on the unconscious man. "We'll need to keep an eye on him. If he's in danger—or if he's dangerous—he'll have to wake up and tell us himself."
Kai gave a slow nod, his smile fading into something more serious. "Agreed. But you know, I've got a feeling this is just the beginning of something big."
Varaan didn't respond right away. She was too focused on the strange lock, still tugging at it in frustration. She wished she could just break it open, but something told her it wasn't going to be that easy.
"Let's get him settled," Varaan said, standing up. "We'll see what he has to say when he wakes up. And in the meantime, I think we've got a lot more questions than answers."
She walked over to the cot and helped Kai lay the unconscious man down, her mind racing with thoughts of what might come next. Whatever was happening, it was clear the strange man was connected to something much bigger than either of them had anticipated. And, as usual, Kai had found a way to stumble right into the heart of it.
As she looked over the man one last time, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. Whatever dark secrets he carried—secrets written in tattoos and locked away under metal—would soon come to light. And when they did, it would change everything.
"Well," Varaan said, turning back to Kai with a small smile, "looks like you've found us our next adventure."
Kai met her gaze, his usual grin returning. "I aim to please."
Varaan raised an eyebrow. "Just don't get us all killed this time."
He chuckled. "No promises."
