Two hours later, Kenji stumbled back into the base, bruised, battered, and absolutely filthy. His Division Knight uniform was covered in dirt and torn in places. His crimson hair was ruffled, twigs stuck in it like some wild animal had dragged him through the underbrush.
By the time he returned, I had already cleaned the room. I scolded him thoroughly before we both went for a bath and had breakfast.
Afterward, our seniors—Miss Stone's team, Team 8—stood in front of us, their presence commanding attention.
"Alright, now we'll be explaining your mission," Miss Stone announced. "Your mission is an escort collaboration mission. You'll be escorting a carriage from the 2nd Division territory to the 6th Division territory. You'll be working together with the Knight Order."
I tilted my head slightly. "Knight Order?"
Miss Stone gave me a confused look before realization dawned. She cleared her throat. "The Knight Order is the Empire's second line of defense against outside threats. Within the Empire, however, they're the first line of defense. They're not as strong as us, but they're formally trained and highly disciplined. Most of the time, their rookies are stronger than ours."
Her lips curled into a grin.
She shook her head, pigtails swaying. "Anyway, this is your first interdivision mission. This mission isn't from Division 4—it's from headquarters. So give it everything you've got."
Her grin widened. "The mission will take about two weeks at best. Have fun and break bones, rookies!"
My eyes widened. Two weeks?
