Chapter 32 – Abyssal Whispers

The battlefield was eerily silent, the only sound the crackle of fading energy and Kairos's labored breaths. He remained on his knees, the weight of exhaustion pressing down, but his attention was locked on the dark, swirling remnants of Vorok's essence, which now pulsed faintly within him.

"Well done… Vessel."

The voice echoed cold and distant, carrying a timbre that felt ancient and calculating. His eyes widened, and his chest tightened with instinctive dread. "Who—"

But the voice offered no introduction, only a cryptic proclamation:

"The first veil has fallen. The path to Dominion unfolds. Embrace it… or be consumed by it."

A Fractured Reflection

The ground beneath him warped, and suddenly Kairos found himself standing within an endless void—his body translucent, a spirit within a dream. Above him floated a colossal, cyclopean eye, pulsating with an abyssal hue. It was not the System. It was something beyond it.

"You're… the source," he muttered, his voice steady despite the void pressing down on his soul.

The eye blinked slowly, and a torrent of fractured visions flooded his mind:

Stars collapsing into nothingness.

A towering entity shattering realms with a wave of its hand.

And himself—standing at the end of it all, crowned in shadows and echoes.

"You were chosen for a singular purpose. The Nullborne Nexus is incomplete… and you, Kairos Valtieri, will be its final piece."

Defiance Born of Will

Kairos's teeth clenched, and his voice cut through the darkness. "Final piece? Yeah, no thanks. I'm nobody's tool. Not yours. Not the System's."

The eye pulsed, and the void trembled with what felt like cold amusement.

"Then resist. But every battle, every victory… will bring you closer to me."

The visions shattered, and Kairos was thrust back into reality—heart pounding, body drenched in sweat.

The Arrival of Selene

"Kairos!"

The familiar voice broke through the chaos. Selene's silhouette dashed into view, her sapphire eyes wide with concern. Without hesitation, she knelt beside him, placing a hand on his bruised cheek. "You're burning up! What happened?"

For a moment, he felt the tension within him ease, the warmth of her touch grounding him. He opened his mouth, torn between telling her the truth and shielding her from the abyssal nightmare he'd glimpsed.

"I… absorbed the Nullborne's core," he said at last, his voice rough. "And something—something else—was waiting behind it."

Selene's eyes flashed with resolve. "Whatever it is, you're not facing it alone."

The System's New Accord

A familiar chime resounded.

System Alert: Host Integrity Stabilized.

New Path Established: Abyssal Dominion – Rank 1

First Ability Unlocked: Abyssal Threading – Manipulate fragments of abyssal essence to create binding threads capable of subduing spiritual and physical entities.

Kairos's hand twitched as faint strands of obsidian energy weaved between his fingers, cold and alien. Yet beneath the corruption, he felt something else—potential.

He met Selene's gaze, his voice steady. "This power… it's dangerous. But I won't let it control me. I'll break it before it breaks me."

A New Challenge Approaches

The ground rumbled, and from the distance, the distorted screech of approaching Nullborne minions pierced the air. Selene drew her weapon, a glimmering lance of crystalline energy. "Looks like we're not getting a break."

Kairos smirked despite himself. "Good. I could use a warm-up."

As the creatures swarmed, his abyssal threads lashed out, ensnaring them mid-air, while Selene's strikes shattered them into shards of nothingness.

They fought back-to-back, a whirlwind of light and shadow. And within the chaos, Kairos felt it—his evolution was just beginning.
