Sawada eagerly booted up the SpongeBob game on his ZEPS console, eyes wide with excitement as the title screen appeared. The colorful pixelated version of Bikini Bottom looked stunning, far exceeding what he expected from a ZEPS game. The graphics were crisp, detailed, and vibrant—comparable to Super Mario Bros. 3 from Zaboru's previous life. Sawada couldn't help but marvel at how ZAGE had outdone himself yet again.
"Wow! The graphics are insane! How did they make it look this good?" Sawada exclaimed. "Man, I really hope I get hired by ZAGE. I need to know how they pull off this kind of magic!"
The game began with SpongeBob standing in an open-world map outside his pineapple house. The area had five paths leading in different directions, but one of them was locked behind a requirement—20 Golden Spatulas.
"Hm, so I need 20 Golden Spatulas to unlock that path," Sawada noted. "But where do I find them?"
As he moved SpongeBob around, he noticed several familiar characters from game menus and opening intro scattered around the starting area—Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs. Curious, he decided to interact with them.
He walked up to Squidward first.
"Hey, Squidward!" SpongeBob greeted me through the text box.
Squidward sighed. "Whatever, SpongeBob."
Sawada laughed. "Hah! This octopus really doesn't give a damn about anything. He totally hates SpongeBob!"
Next, he approached Patrick.
"Hey, Patrick!"
"Hey, SpongeBob!" Patrick replied cheerfully.
Then, Sawada moved on to Mr. Krabs.
"Hey, Mr. Krabs!"
"Hello, son," Mr. Krabs answered.
After interacting with the characters, Sawada decided to explore one of the available paths. As he approached, a text box appeared: Jellyfish Catching - 0/5 Golden Spatulas.
"So I need to clear four other stages to gather 20 Golden Spatulas… Fair enough," he mused. Without hesitation, he selected the Jellyfish Catching stage.
The game transitioned into a side-scrolling platformer. SpongeBob, now wielding a long jellyfish net, had to catch as many jellyfish as possible while navigating through the level. A counter appeared at the top of the screen: 0/30 Jellyfish. The objective was clear—catch at least 30 jellyfish before end of the stages to complete the stage.
Sawada started playing, quickly getting the hang of the controls. The platforming mechanics were tight and responsive, making the experience even more enjoyable. However, he soon realized that the jellyfish weren't just floating around passively—some of them actively attacked him! If SpongeBob got hit, the number of jellyfish he had caught would decrease by one.
"Damn! This is actually pretty challenging," Sawada muttered as he dodged a jellyfish's electric attack. Despite the difficulty, he managed to arrive at the finish line of the first stage with 36 jellyfish, though he had lost a few along the way due to getting zapped.
The second stage ramped up the difficulty, introducing moving platforms and faster jellyfish. The third stage, however, surprised Sawada with a new mechanic—the Bubble Cannon , SpongeBob can
"Huh? A weapon? What do I need this for?" he wondered.
Not long after, he encountered Green Jellyfish that couldn't be caught with the net. The only way to defeat them was by hitting them twice with the Bubble Cannon.
"Oh! That's so cool! This game keeps adding new mechanics!" Sawada grinned as he took aim and blasted a Green Jellyfish, watching it pop into bubbles before vanishing.
The fourth stage added even more challenges, requiring him to balance between using the net and the Bubble Cannon strategically. The level design was impressive, encouraging and the platforming is quite fun.
Then came the final stage of the Jellyfish Catching challenge. Sawada expected it to be tough, but he didn't anticipate what happened next—the screen started shaking violently.
BOSS BATTLE: KING JELLYFISH!
"What? A boss fight!?" Sawada gasped in excitement.
The King Jellyfish was massive, looming over SpongeBob as it summoned waves of smaller jellyfish to attack. It also had a powerful tentacle strike that could stun SpongeBob momentarily if he got too close.
As Sawada fought the boss, he noticed something interesting in the background—a mysterious figure wearing a black suit and a gray helmet was also catching jellyfish.
"Wait, is that… Zabo-Man!?" he realized.
The Zabo-man cameoed in the game, subtly catching Jelly Fishes in the background. It was a neat Easter egg that made Sawada even more excited.
"Heh, seeing Zabo-man really interesting "
Focusing back on the fight, Sawada used all his skills to dodge the King Jellyfish's attacks and land precise Bubble Cannon shots. After several intense minutes, the boss finally exploded into bubbles, leaving behind a Golden Spatula.
"YES! I DID IT!" Sawada cheered. The screen then displayed: Jellyfish Catching Completed – 5/5 Golden Spatulas Acquired!
He checked the in-game clock—it had taken him nearly 45 minutes to complete the first challenge.
"Wow, that was longer than I expected, but it was fun for real." he said, stretching his arms.
Now, with five Golden Spatulas in hand, he was eager to dive into the remaining challenges. What other surprises did this game have in store?
With renewed excitement, he moved SpongeBob towards the next available path, ready for whatever adventure awaited.
