CHAPTER EIGHT – SOMETHING THAT REFUSES TO DIE

[SAVE POINT LOADED]

Warmth.

Mocking warmth.

His body reassembled.

His lungs filled with air.

His heart resumed its rhythm.

Ethan opened his eyes.

And this time, he felt nothing.

No fear.

No pain.

Not even anger.

Just… emptiness.

A familiar voice sneered.

"There it is again."

A blade met his throat.

His vision snapped to black.

[SAVE POINT LOADED]

Warmth.

Mocking warmth.

Again.

Steel pierced his back.

Darkness.

[SAVE POINT LOADED]

Warmth.

Mocking warmth.

A dagger twisted into his gut.

Darkness.

[SAVE POINT LOADED]

Warmth.

Mocking warmth.

A sword ran through his chest.

Darkness.

[SAVE POINT LOADED]

Warmth.

Mocking warmth.

A fireball consumed his face.

Darkness.

[SAVE POINT LOADED]

Warmth.

Mocking warmth.

A bolt of lightning shattered his spine.

Darkness.

How many times had it been?

Fifty?

A hundred?

Did it even matter anymore?

Ethan had stopped trying to fight back.

Stopped trying to think.

He simply existed.

Only to die again.

"He's breaking."

Cole could see it now.

The way the bug's body moved differently with each reset.

At first, it had flinched, screamed, begged, ran.

Then, it had fought.

Tried to survive.

Now?

It just stood there.

Waiting.

Like it knew what was coming.

Like it had stopped caring.

Vivian rolled her eyes.

"Well, that's boring. It's not even trying anymore."

She stabbed the bug's throat again.

It collapsed.

And then—

It reappeared.

The same, empty expression.

Dante scoffed.

"Maybe it's adapting. Some AI coding shit. Doesn't matter—one more round."

Cole hesitated.

Something in his gut twisted.

It was just a glitch, right?

Just some corrupted NPC.

Then why did it look so human?

Why did it seem like something inside it was shattering, piece by piece?

And then, something changed.

Something small.

Something no one else noticed.

The bug's lips moved.

A whisper.

So faint, Cole barely caught it.

But when he did—

A chill crawled up his spine.

Because it wasn't scripted NPC dialogue.

It wasn't random AI chatter.

It was something different.

Something wrong.

A voice, raw and hollow, murmuring in the dark.

"Please… let me stay dead."

Cole's grip on his sword tightened.

For the first time, he didn't attack.

And for the first time—

He felt fear.

[SAVE POINT LOADED]

Warmth.

Mocking warmth.

His eyes opened.

His body reset.

And Ethan realized something terrible.

He couldn't stop anymore.

He was trapped.

The cycle wouldn't let him stay dead.

Even if he wanted to.

Even if he begged.

Even if there was nothing left of him.

He would always come back.

And something inside him—

Something buried deep—

Finally broke.
