As expected, when the fuse had almost burned through, Heatwave floored the gas pedal. Under the pull of the iron chain, the section burned by the fuse was directly torn off.
ASH and Owen, both wearing black hoods and holding guns, approached. As the smoke dissipated slightly, the two of them rushed into the carriage.
Inside the sealed carriage, the effect of the tear gas was maximized. The FBI agents inside had almost all lost their ability to resist—some fell unconscious, while others remained awake but were unable to do anything other than cough violently.
Alex, dressed in an orange-red prison jumpsuit, was easy to identify. He was coughing loudly, his face a mess, looking utterly miserable.
Owen used a pair of bolt cutters to snip off the shackles on Alex's wrists, then dragged him out of the carriage with visible disgust. ASH remained on guard with his gun.
Outside, Heatwave, who had also rushed over, pulled a black cloth bag over Alex's head, then taped up his hands and feet. Once secured, they stuffed him into the trunk of Owen's car.
"Package received, now leaving…"
Owen reported his status over the earpiece and whistled to signal ASH to get ready to leave.
ASH withdrew while keeping his gun raised, and then the three of them got into their cars.
As before, Owen took the lead, with Heatwave following behind. The two MINIs retreated along the pre-planned escape route. By the time they left, not a single person had managed to crawl out of the armored transport vehicle.
On the ground, three of their teammates had already abandoned their Land Rover and rushed into an underground parking garage of a nearby building. A few minutes later, they sped away on motorcycles, leaving the other robbers and government forces locked in a deadly battle.
In the narrow street, the sudden turn of events left the mercenaries without a target.
With the objective gone, the fight had lost all meaning. The smart ones were already considering retreat, while the foolish ones continued fighting, throwing their lives away for nothing.
Some experienced mercenaries immediately realized the situation when they saw the gaping hole—their efforts had only benefited someone else. Someone had gotten to the target before them. Not all mercenaries had concentrated their forces in the narrow street; some had the foresight to take an alternative approach.
The armored transport was undoubtedly below the steel plate, but in the middle of this hail of gunfire, no one could possibly lift a multi-ton steel barrier. After losing a few men, the mercenaries wised up.
Those who reacted quickly had already sent backup teams to the nearest subway station. These were seasoned veterans who instantly figured out their opponent's plan. It was clever, but once reversed, the weak point was obvious—the subway tunnel.
However, the response they received was that the subway had stopped running, and a train car had conveniently blocked the tunnel.
This was clearly intentional. The backup team searched for another subway station. This time, they got lucky—while the trains were also halted, at least the passage was still accessible.
The team rushed in a panic to reach the station, but when they arrived, all they found was a lone armored transport vehicle with a carriage full of unconscious agents. Their $100 million was gone.
After confirming that Bryan and the others had also safely escaped, Owen and his team were still looping through the underground tunnels.
The routes had been meticulously pre-planned, and they had even familiarized themselves with them beforehand, so navigating wasn't difficult. The reason for looping around was that they needed to reach the sewer system before the subway's power was restored.
Owen and Heatwave had created an entry point the previous night. After studying blueprints for both systems, they found a spot where the two were close enough to connect.
Using explosives and shovels, they had dug an opening just big enough for a car to pass through. To prevent detection, they had covered it with a black tarp. In the dimly lit tunnels, it was nearly impossible to spot unless someone got very close.
According to previous tests, once Sweetie cut off the controls, the subway system would take a minimum of five minutes to resume operation. Their route from the escape site to the temporary tunnel entrance required only three and a half minutes.
The roar of engines echoed in the tunnel.
The modified MINI Coopers, tuned by Dominic, unleashed their full power, proving highly capable on such complex terrain.
After a small turn, Owen recalled that the entrance to the sewer system was just ahead. Though the car's headlights revealed only darkness, he knew it was there.
The car sped forward without hesitation, showing no signs of slowing down as it charged straight toward the pitch-black wall.
Thank God his memory was spot-on. The tarp was pushed aside, and both cars passed through, entering the sewer. Whether this hole would flood the subway during heavy rains in the future was no longer their concern.
At worst, they could send an anonymous letter to warn the subway company—assuming they were still alive by then.
The sewer system's terrain was much easier to navigate than the subway tunnels. Though narrower, at least there weren't any pesky tracks that could trap their wheels. Owen had been carefully maintaining his driving angle earlier, fearing that a wheel might get stuck.
Now, their speed increased significantly.
Dirty water occasionally dripped from the pipes, splashing onto the cars, leaving them filthy. Owen didn't even want to think about what was in that water.
The windshield was a blurry mess. He turned on the wipers, clearing his view again.
The sewer route wasn't long, and before long, they saw the exit, with the sky clearly visible outside.
As they neared the exit, Owen deliberately slowed down. The car soared out of the drainage opening smoothly. Heatwave, right behind him, followed suit and launched into the air as well.
The feeling of seeing daylight again was incredible.
The airborne MINIs landed solidly, their four tires gripping the ground as they continued forward.
Ahead lay a flood channel, but at this time, it was dry. The two MINIs sped along the open space, enjoying the exhilarating sense of freedom.
"OH YEAH~~~~~"
Heatwave's excited yell echoed through the earpiece. They had successfully pulled off the most difficult step of their plan—snatching Alex from both the CTU and the mercenaries. They had actually done it.
This plan had been risky, with some gambling involved, but they had succeeded. It was an undeniably thrilling achievement.
After sprinting through the flood channel for about ten minutes, Owen spotted a tire lying in the middle of the path. He had placed it there yesterday as a marker—to signal that it was time to turn.
Slamming the gas pedal, Owen turned the wheel sharply to the right. The powerful engine easily propelled the MINI up the thirty-degree slope of the embankment. The car crossed an area of grass and wasteland, then maneuvered through several streets before re-entering the city.
This part of town was more remote, not as congested as the previous areas. Though there were still plenty of vehicles on the road, traffic was moving relatively smoothly.
A police car approached from the opposite direction. Owen and Heatwave maintained a normal speed, trying to appear as inconspicuous as possible.
The police car passed without showing any signs of suspicion. Only after it disappeared at the end of the street did they accelerate again.
Speeding through multiple red lights, the two cars finally reached the entrance to Highway 15. From here, they could drive straight to Las Vegas.
