Scene 1: The Weight of a Name
Kōsei Academy Library — Afternoon
Ren Sato's fingers traced the spine of an old, leather-bound book titled Legends of the Tokugawa Era. Dust motes floated in the sunlight streaming through the library's high windows, and the faint hum of the air conditioner did little to mask the sound of his heartbeat. He'd been searching for hours, but Hiroshi's journal entries about "Akira Takahashi" yielded nothing in the school's archives.
"Names are masks," Kiyomi had said. Ren scowled, slumping back in his chair. The pendant around his neck pulsed faintly, as if mocking him.
"You look like you're trying to murder that book," a voice boomed behind him.
Ren turned to see Taro "Max" Matsuda, his Osaka accent thick and his grin wider than the Sumida River. Max dropped into the seat beside him, a half-eaten taiyaki in hand. "Seriously, dude. You've been hiding here all week. What's the deal? Girl trouble? Money trouble?"
"Neither," Ren muttered, closing the book. "Just… research."
Max leaned closer, squinting at the journal's open page. "Who's Akira Takahashi? Yakuza? Secret idol?"
"Dead," Ren said flatly.
Max whistled. "Dark. But hey—" He flicked Ren's pendant. "—this thing's creepy. Looks like it's watching me."
Before Ren could retort, the library doors slammed open. Three seniors from the kendo club loomed in the doorway, their wooden shinai slung over their shoulders. Kaito, the ringleader, smirked. "Look. The arsonist's playing detective."
Ren's hand tightened around the pendant. *Mercy first*, he reminded himself.

Scene 2: The Spark of Entropy
Kōsei Academy Library — Moments Later
The bullies circled Ren's table. Kaito snatched Hiroshi's journal, flipping through it with a sneer. "What's this? A diary? *'Dear Diary, today I burned down my house—'*"
"Give it back," Ren said, his voice low.
Max stood, fists clenched. "Back off, guys. He's not worth it."
Kaito ignored him, tearing a page from the journal. Ren's vision blurred. The pendant flared, ice-cold energy surging up his spine.
Crack.
The air rippled. A bookshelf behind Kaito shuddered, its contents freezing mid-collapse—books suspended in air, dust particles crystallized like tiny stars. The bullies froze, eyes wide.
"Y-Yōkai!" one stammered, stumbling back.
A woman's voice cut through the silence. "Enough."
Haruka Fujimoto, the librarian, stood in the doorway. Her sleeve tattoos—koi fish that seemed to swim as she moved—rippled under the fluorescent lights. "Clean this up," she said, staring at Ren, "or I'll report you to someone far less forgiving."
The ice shattered. Books crashed to the floor.

Scene 3: The Photo in the Attic
Sato Apartment — Night
Rain tapped against the window as Ren rummaged through the attic. Anna was working late again, but her secrets were everywhere—boxes labeled Gatekeeper and 2003 stacked beneath a tarp.
Inside one, he found a photo: a younger Anna in black tactical gear, standing beside a woman who looked like Kiyomi's twin. The caption read: "Operation Gatekeeper. Yuriko Hara & Anna Sato. Targets neutralized."
A jade bracelet glinted in the photo—the same one Anna never took off.
The apartment door clicked open. "Ren?"
He froze. Anna stood at the attic ladder, her face pale. "What are you doing up here?"
"Who's Yuriko Hara?" he demanded, holding up the photo.
Anna's composure cracked. She lunged, snatching the photo. "This—this is none of your business!"
"You lied! Dad didn't die in a fire, did he?!"
The slap echoed. Anna's hand trembled. "*Your father died protecting you… from them."
"Them who?!"
"The Celestial Vanguard," she whispered, collapsing to her knees. "They think the Gates are a curse. They'll kill anyone connected to them—even you."

Scene 4: The Seer's Warning
Hara Residence — Dawn
Kiyomi dragged Ren through the mist-shrouded streets of Asakusa to a dilapidated traditional house. Her grandmother, Yuriko Hara, lay in a futon, her breath shallow. The room smelled of incense and decay.
"Grandmother," Kiyomi said, kneeling. "He's here."
Yuriko's milky eyes snapped open. She seized Ren's pendant, her grip shockingly strong. "Akira's sin is your inheritance," she hissed. "The Vanguard comes. They smell the Gate on you."
"How do I stop them?" Ren asked.
Yuriko laughed, a sound like rusted hinges. "Stop them? You are the key. The 9th Gate demands balance. Entropy and Stasis. But Akira… he chose chaos." Her voice faded. "Your mother chose… love."
A knock thundered at the door.
Kiyomi peered through the window. "Men in black suits. They're not Japanese."

Scene 5: The Dragon's Shadow
Shanghai, China — Simultaneously
Akira Takahashi stood in a vault beneath the Oriental Pearl Tower, his white hair glowing in the dim light. Before him lay a pedestal holding a relic—a pendant twin to Ren's, its serpent coiled in the opposite direction.
"Two halves," he murmured, clasping it around his neck. "But only one Sovereign."
The ground trembled. A masked figure emerged from the shadows—Zhang Wei, his voice cold. "You stole from the Celestial Vanguard once, Wang Longtian. You won't escape again."
Akira smirked. "Tell Li Na I said hello."
He vanished in a whirl of shadows, leaving Zhang Wei to glare at the empty pedestal.

End Hook:
Back in Tokyo, Ren stood frozen as the Hara residence door splintered. Two figures stepped inside: Zhang Wei, his eyes like daggers, and Li Na, flames dancing on her fingertips. "Ren Sato," Zhang said. "You will come with us. The Vanguard does not ask twice."
