Fallen in Love

“Uhmm, you’re not going to like what I’m about to tell you,” Mariana began cautiously.

Carmen’s brow furrowed, her gaze sharpening. “What’s going on, Mariana? Is Diego okay?”

Mariana hesitated, then sighed. “He’s fine–physically, at least. But he’s resumed work.”

Carmen sat upright, ignoring the sharp pain in her side. “What?” she demanded, her voice a mix of disbelief and anger. “Why would he do that? He’s still recovering from a kidney transplant! What was he thinking?”

“I told him it was a terrible idea,” Mariana said quickly, holding up her hands. “I even begged him not to, but he wouldn’t listen. He said he didn’t want to wait around for you to keep feeding him. He’s a man, Carmi. He said he had to take care of himself.”

Carmen’s mouth fell open, her anger boiling over. “Feeding him? Did I ever say I was tired of helping him? Did I ever complain about supporting my brother while he recovered?!”
