Elias stood before the massive stone gates of the Trial, towering high above the city. The entrance was engraved with ancient symbols, pulsing faintly with divine energy. It was a door that had been passed through by countless warriors before him-some seeking power, others seeking redemption. Most never returned.
His fists clenched as he took a deep breath. His body was still weak, untrained, but his hatred burned stronger than ever. If this was the only path to vengeance, then he would carve his way through it.
The moment he stepped forward, the runes on the gate flared to life. A deep, rumbling voice echoed through the air.
"Challenger recognized. Trial initiation begins."
The doors groaned as they parted, revealing a spiral staircase descending into the unknown. Cold air rushed out from the depths, carrying the scent of damp stone and something else-blood.
Elias took his first step into the Trial.
The descent felt endless. The deeper he went, the heavier the air became, thick with an unseen pressure. When he finally reached the bottom, he stepped into a massive stone chamber illuminated by flickering torches. The ceiling stretched high above him, the walls lined with ancient carvings of battles fought long ago.
A golden archway stood at the far end, leading to the first floor of the Trial. As he moved toward it, text appeared in front of him, glowing in midair.
"First Layer: The Gate of Mortals." "Floor 1: Survive."
The moment he crossed the threshold, the archway vanished behind him. He was trapped.
The floor was an open battlefield-stone tiles cracked with age, patches of dry grass growing between them. At the far end, a rusted gate rattled violently before bursting open.
From the darkness beyond, the first enemies of the Trial emerged.
A pack of goblins, their twisted green bodies clad in scraps of leather, rushed forward. They carried crude weapons-daggers, clubs, rusted swords. Their eyes gleamed with hunger, their grins revealing rows of jagged teeth.
Elias' heart pounded. He had no weapon. No armor.
Just his hands.
The first goblin lunged at him with a dagger, snarling. He barely dodged in time, the blade grazing his side. Pain flared through his body, but he forced himself to move. If he hesitated, he was dead.
The second goblin swung a club at his head. He ducked low, his instincts taking over. With a burst of desperation, he grabbed the goblin's arm and yanked it forward, sending the creature tumbling over his shoulder. Before it could recover, he stomped down on its throat, crushing it with a sickening crack.
A warmth spread through his body. Power surged into him.
His ability-Absorption.
The goblin's meager strength became his own. He could feel it in his muscles, the slight increase in agility, the sharpening of his reflexes.
The other goblins hesitated, sensing the change in him.
A slow grin formed on Elias' face.
"Come on, then," he growled.
They charged.
By the time the battle ended, Elias stood alone, surrounded by the corpses of his enemies. His body ached, bruises and cuts covering his arms and torso. But he was alive.
And more importantly, he was stronger.
A chime echoed through the air. The text appeared again.
"Floor 1: Complete."
"Proceed to the next challenge."
A staircase materialized at the far end of the battlefield, leading to the second floor.
Elias wiped the blood from his face.
He had survived his first battle.
Now, there were ninety-nine more floors to go.
And at the end of this layer... the first boss god awaited him.
With a deep breath, he stepped forward.
The Trial had only just begun.
