Chapter 36: Cracks Between Worlds

Elias stood over the smoldering remains of the beast, his mind racing. This shouldn't have happened. Creatures from the Trial weren't supposed to exist outside its walls-yet here one was, and it had carried the essence of Kaelis, the Beastlord.

Something was breaking.

He clenched his fists. If the barriers between the tower and the real world were weakening, the consequences could be catastrophic. The Trial was meant to be a contained test, a proving ground for challengers seeking power. If its monsters started slipping into the outside world, there would be chaos.

His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of hurried footsteps approaching.

"Elias!"

He turned to see Althea rushing toward him, her expression tense. She stopped a few feet away, her sharp eyes scanning the destruction around them. Her gaze settled on the burned remains of the beast, and her fingers instinctively tightened around the hilt of her sword.

"What the hell happened here?" she asked.

Elias exhaled, his breath still heavy from the fight. "That thing wasn't from this world," he said. "It came from the Trial."

Althea's expression darkened. "That's impossible. Nothing is supposed to escape the Trial."

"I know," Elias said. "But it did."

She took a step closer, her brows furrowing as she studied the ground. "The city guard has been investigating disappearances near the outskirts, but we never found any bodies-only signs of struggle, like something had dragged people away. If creatures from the Trial are responsible..."

Elias narrowed his eyes. "Then it means more of them are slipping through."

Althea's jaw tightened. "We need to report this."

Elias wasn't sure if he cared about that. He wasn't a protector of this city-he had his own path, his own vengeance to chase. But if more creatures appeared, they wouldn't just attack the city. They would spread. And if the wrong kind of beast or godling made it out...

The world itself could be in danger.

Althea studied him carefully. "You're planning to go back into the Trial, aren't you?"

He nodded. "I need answers."

A brief silence stretched between them before she sighed. "I figured as much." Then, her expression hardened. "I'm coming with you."

Elias blinked, surprised. "What?"

"You heard me," she said, crossing her arms. "You're strong, but if the Trial's breaking, then you'll need all the help you can get. And I'm not about to let something like this happen to my city without doing something about it."

Elias considered her words. Althea was strong-he had seen that firsthand. But the Trial wasn't just another battlefield. It was a place where gods tested mortals, where even the most powerful could be crushed in an instant.

Still... she had helped him before. And if she was determined, he wasn't going to waste time arguing.

"...Fine," he said. "But don't expect me to save you."

Althea smirked. "I wasn't planning on it."

Elias turned toward the distant gate. His path was set. The third layer awaited and with it, even greater dangers.

But now, he wasn't going in alone.
